Fender to body

I just got a new set of fenders. Is there any sort of material that should go between the fender and the body or is it a metal to metal joint?

There is a paper type tape the factory uses, where you find it is beyond me. If you do find it let me/us know. It must be available out there somewhere.

You also might ask a body shop or two what, if any, they use or suggest.

I would think electrical tape would work, just to protect the two sides from rust and rubbing against each other. I also have added large fender washers for more of a contact surface.

I would / am planning to use a flexible type of seam sealer such as strip caulk.

or a seam sealer in a tube.


Any seam should be protected from water infiltration where moisture can get in and hide. And if moisture can get in so can air, the other ingredient for rust to occur. Even if the surfaces are painted, vibration can rub thru over time. The factory sealed these up after assembly, but if it fails at that one edge, water can get in, as many of us have seen.
If you can find a butyl tape that would probably work too. Any auto body supply place should be able to help you.

Thanks everyone. I went with seam sealer. Recommended by a body shop.
