Ok, so I've had this 1953 CJ3b but I'm trying to find out exactly what motor and Transmission I have. I know they had f heads L heads, hurricane motors??? I've had so many different things told to me, that I have no clue now what I got. All I need is a sure way of telling. Can anyone help me out?? I've had this jeep for about twelve years or so, but I'm just now getting serious. My dad had this jeep running around 78' to about 87'. I got it in 99' he had set it out in one of our fields and the hood leaked water down into the head every time it rained so I had to take everything apart, going to be a fun project.

From what I can find, you have the hurricane motor. It was first produced in the 1953 CJ3b , unless someone changed it. As for transmissions, I haven't found that yet, but I will keep looking.
The Jeep Bible is a great book if you want to spend the money. Lots of valuable info in it. I used to one one, but it got lost in moving somehow.

Well....If it's stock equipment you have a Huricane F-134 engine, T-90 3 speed Transmission , dana/Spicer 18 Transfer Case , Dana 44 rear end w/tapered axle shafts, Dana 27 front axle.
The engine designation as an F-134 leeds you to think it's a flat head but it's not, the L head engine is the flathead and was in the CJ3a and earlier.

Engine swaps are extremely commom. You should post a picture.

There you go. A standard F-head. Probably original to the jeep.

Nice 3B!
