Being from the northeast, rust is an way of life. Trying to decide to repair my current '79 CJ5 frame or start new, and build my own. Anyone have pictures of there home built frame? :chug:
 
Home built frames for CJ's after 75 are hard because they put some complicated bends in them. Im assuming you have a rotted back section? they make replacement panels for them. Ive also cut down a CJ7 frame to the dimensions of a CJ5 frame.. They are hard to come by here in FL. Post up some pics of the rot spots repairing them might be easier.
 
Believe it or not it is rock solid in the back half! The front dog leg is rusting out below the firewall and the bottom behind the Transfer Case . The patch would be easy but, the frame was modified by the PO with taller spring mounts. I have the original mounts from a donor and body mounts. To put them on the old frame and wait for it to crack, or build new and use them on the new frame, is the dilema.?
 
You could keep your eyes open for a frane that is rotted out in the rear, then splice em together.. Ive dontthat a few times with frames.. Im sure you can find a rusty butt CJ5 or 7 frame for cheap.

Im sure you can build a straight frame for it out of 2x4 box. you would have to move your body mounts and relocate the spring perches on the rear axle. Then the stock gas tank would have to be swapped for a smaller unit, new cross member. Unles your some master fabricator I would think making a frame from sctratch would be pretty difficult.
 
I think I could build one cheaper...if I had a factory drawing. or has anyone gone full custom, not full tube frame.?
