Hey guys. I Just picked up a 1984 CJ7 in a trade for a 250cc atv (pretty good deal to me!) and all is good on it except the frame. Its at a point where patching it really won't make a difference. I've found a guy around where I live who has a couple 1989 CJs and I was wondering if the frames were compatible? Also, if you know of anything that WOULDN'T be compatible between the two models. Thanks!

They didn't make the CJ in "89....but they did make the YJ. The frames and body tubs (along with a few other do-dads) are close enough to work with out alot of effort.

Too bad your so far away...I have a decent '83 frame I'd sell cheap!

Take a tape measure to it. check as many of the important dimensions as you can. Distance between body mounts, distance between rails at several places, check the motor mounts. It will be a lot easier with a partner.
You can tell if it's going to fit and if it won't, with out work or it won't if you cut it apart and re assembled it.
If it will work if you do a few changes can you do the work and do you want to do the work.
It will be cool if you can find the year, it may make mounting the tank and running fuel lines a bit easier.

this might help with that part...

I believe the wrangler frames are even wider in the back than the CJ7 's. Doesn't mean that you can't make it work though.

sorry for the post hijack, but mylittlecj5 you wouldn't happen to have this for a CJ5 in the 1976 flavor would you?. again sorry for the hijack.

I think I have what you need, but I cannot remember if the service manual I have is for a 74 or 78 but it should be close enough.

I hope I have done this correctly! But a PDF is attached of the 1975 frame dimensions for a CJ5 and 6.

Would an XJ/cherokee frame work?
If the XJ had a frame....
....eh....no. It still wouldnt work.

And neither would the CJ5 frame you are asking about :wtf:

the CJ5 feame is ten inches shorter than a 7. what i have found is that another 7 frame bolts right up and a yj (87-95) will work with a little modification i know a few of the body mount locations are different and i think the rear of the frame is a few inches wider that a CJ7
