1977 CJ5, 232, T18, AMC 20...still trying to figure the rest out!
Fellow Jeepers -

I recently purchased a 1977 CJ5 project. It has the original 1-barrel Carter carb. The Jeep was running really rich, some black smoke and super smelly. I had the carb completely re-built and it runs great. However, I still get a bit of black smoke and am still getting fumigated by the fuel smell. I'm thinking perhaps the fuel pump might be the culprit. It looks pretty new and I'm thinking the pressure might be too high. Does this sound right and if so, does anyone know what the pressure should be? I'm waiting for my Chilton's to arrive in the mail and I'm going CRAZY!!! Thanks for any suggestions!

4-5 psi

Other possibilitys would include poor carb float adjustment, stuck float, or something just letting too much fuel go thru. Those performance spark plugs not designed for your engine can also be an issue.

Do have the fuel filter with a return line to the tank?

Thanks to all of you for your inputs. I'll def check the fuel pressure this weekend, once it warms up a bit here. I do have the filter with a return line to the tank. However, I need to check & see if it's actually done properly. So far I haven't found anything "proper" about this little beast. Too many hands have done too many half-*** things to it. I will check the spark plugs and fuel routing as well as the carb floats, settings etc this weekend. And I got an email today that my Chilton's should be delivered Tuesday. Sweeeeet!!!!!

Thanks again everyone. i'll let you know how it goes!!!

I would also be looking for leaks. Common leak is the fuel tank sending unit.
Let me ask-Are you runing the OEM mechancial pump?

I don't believe it's the original pump. As for being an OEM part, heaven only knows. It does look newer than the rest of the engine compartment. But this little beast has been owned by too many hands doing too many strange things. That's going to be the largest problem I have when troubleshooting. It'll get better as I become more familiar with it's "personalization". LOL

Will def be checking for leaks and need to replace hoses. They all look dry rotted. Thanks for helping!!!

OK-So you're say'n it's a stock type mechanical pump then and NOT some aftermarket electrical FP.
Don't park inside a enclosed garage till you find the source of these fumes.
Good luck:chug:
