Fuel sending unit help

To start off it is in a 83 CJ7 , my problem is that it works but never drops below half a tank. I have the tank dropped to replace cracked fuel lines and was wondering if it needs adjustment or replaced. I dont really want to drop the tank again. I was thinking that maybe it was sicking at the half point, but it moves freely. Any help is appreciated.

Since you have the tank out, remove the sending unit. You can hook up the sending unit, ground it, turn the key on and manually move the sending unit float to test its operation. It should register on the gauge fully. Some guys put a door in the bed over the location of the sending unit to get at it while it is mounted for fine adjustment, that is on my list. This is a good time to clean it out also.
