should the hot and ground wires be on the same post?:confused:
 
The sender might have a spade terminal on it. It goes to ground.

The wire going to the gauge goes to the terminal on the sender.

A photo would help.
 
Disregard this post it does have the ground to a spade.
I did totally unhook the aftermarket gauge and it stays on full.Would think unhooked it would drop to empty.Stays on full all the time.
