Fuel tank over pressure..

is caused by.............? I just drug a 1986 CJ7 with a 20 gallon tank on it to the haus. Kinda slowly working on it. Had it running about long enough to cruise down to the local C-store for some beer and fill up the tank. Got back to the casa and she died and wouldn't restart. Coil and Ign module were to hot to touch. For some unknown reason I removed the fuel cap and gas puked out onto the ground (EPA knows all about it). So why? wrong cap (it's a replacement) bad roll over valves, does it just need to be vented somewhere? One more thing ya'll get ready for a whole passel of dumb <-BAD WORD-> questions cuz' I'm new to the Jeep thing. D

Welcome.First thing is to get you a factory service manual on it.If you look in the Doc section of this site there is some info there to read.Vented gas cap is what it needs.There are to vent lines also in the tank.I'll let someone else chime in on the module.

I hate to sound like a smart a#$ but you have a wiring problem with the module. All the help I can give is to say find a FSM and spend some time chasing wires. Consider it an opportunity to become intimate with the wiring of your CJ.
No matter what you may believe at this time, I think you will find that better than half of the problems you have on this vehicle will end up being electrical. The sooner you get to know your way around, the better off you will be.

Don't laugh, well go ahead and laugh I won't hear it. Would you consider a Chilton's book good enough? If not, then where's a good place to get a FSM? I don't consider anyone who answers to be a smart alek; I'm pleased to see responses. Just remember, I never claimed to be a mechanically endowed. My specialities lay else where.

The Chiltons/ Haynes are better than nothing, by a long way. The FSM is just better, especially the diagrams. they are just a bit bigger and a bit easier to read. But they are, for the most part, the same diagram.
If you are going to own a CJ you need to own a FSM. I consider myself to be a fair wrench turner and I very seldom do anything to the CJ with out looking in the book. It shortens the learning curve a lot. If you spend enough time trying to figure what is going on under the dash and around the engine bay you will start talking to imaginary friends before you actually fix anything.

I kinda had the same fuel problem. Drilled a small 1/16 hole through the back center plastic and it helped the pressure issue, but the garage always smelled like gas. Then talked to a fellow jeeper and found out I needed to return my charcoal canister up front to vent my fumes and pressure. Best of my knowledge all the caps are non vented, thats why I vented mine, but then I got the fume thing. Hope this helps alittle.

FSM has been ordered. I'm almost sure my one of my fuel lines is hooked up to the cannister in the front. I pulled the gas tank and cleaned it out before I even moved the thing. I will try to double check it tomorrow, provided work allows. Which is where I'm at now. Nothing, and I mean nothing beats being on call for the weekend. 2nd callout today. I'm always open to any ideas. That would probably explain why I didn't finish college.
