'79 CJ7, 304, AT, Quadratrac HiLo w/ part time conversion.
I have a 79 CJ7 with the stock steel 15 gallon tank. I have a chance to snag a stock 21 gallon poly tank from an 82 CJ7 for next to nothing.
Worthwhile move?
Any pitfalls or snags I need to be aware of?
What's involved with the swap?

When I added mine it came with the extension plates that mount to the stock skid plate. Not a big job if the tank is empty :D It will lower the tank by at least 3+ inches and can be hit easier while off roading, and if you do not have a lift the rear diff will hit it without much effort while off roading.
 
i dont think the stock tank he is talking about is vertically deeper like the aftermarket ones, the ones from the factory that were 21 gal were wider than the 15 not taller.
 
It looks like the filler neck is in the same place, is the sending unit in about the right place??:D
 
I don't have the tank on hand just yet, according to the gent it is the factory 20 gal from his 82 CJ7 . Tank only, no skid plate or straps. Just trying to figure out if it a worthwhile venture. The dimensions he tossed at me are: 29w. X 16d x 13.5?(probably 15) high...
 
One issue with going to the larger tank is that it hangs down quite a bit, making it it vulnerable to getting clobbered. So that should be first on the list as weather or not to invest in it. Like it would depend on the type of wheeling you are going to do. I have the 15 gal. tank with a few dents and have a rack to carry two 5 gal cans.

Well this is why I am wondering if it is worth it. My Jeep has a home brewed auxiliary tank on the floor of the bed that measures 35"x35"x4, if my math is good it should be a smidgen over 21 gallons.
I also have a pair of jerries on the rear rack.
 
The 20 Gallon tank is very worth the effort. Sure it is slightly deeper than the OEM 15 gallon, but it still is well above your axle.

You will want to find an OEM skid plate for the Tank. It will not fit the 15 gallon one so simply lowering the 15 gallon tank skid plate will not work. You will need to buy a 20 gallon fuel sending unit if there is not a working one included (even if a used one is included you may as well replace it with a brand new unit).

I currently have a 20 gal in my CJ and I swapped one into another CJ i used to own. If I remember correctly, aside from the new sending unit, I think I had to buy 20 gallon specific filler neck tubes (whatever the heck they are called). I also had my exhaust running out the back between the skid plate and the rear driver spring hanger. I cant remember what was hitting what, but I could not get the OEM skidplate in without removing the tail pipe and having it rerouted. It still came out in the same location so imthinking it was that the 20 gal skid plate is wider than the 15.

The major advantage of the poly tank is it will not sweat as much, nor will it corrode on the inside. This will reduce the amount of debris that can clog your fuel system.
