When I first start my CJ there is a funky clicking coming from the front of the engine (a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l ). It doesn't sound like a lifter. Based on where it seems to be coming from my guess is the fan clutch. The noise stops when I get up to operating temperature so I am not sure. Wouldn't a bad fan clutch bearing click regardless of temperature?

Might be a problem i your fan clutch is thermal... They lockup when they reach temp.
