gas install pics

I have an issue. My fuel tank is a plastic one that has never worked correctly. The PO did not install it correctly and they did not install the skid plate correctly either. For the life of me I can not figure out how to drop the tank. I want to replace and install a steel tank correctly. I will post pics tomorrow. I am thinking the only way to get the tank dropped is to lift the body to get at the bolts holding everything in.

I was wonder if anyone could post pics that show clearly how the front of the skid plate is attached. I have looked diagrams and pics but I can not for the life of figure it out or see it clearly.

Please help.

On mine, the front of the skid plate is 2 brackets hanging down from the body. It bolts through the front of the skid with 4 bolts through the bottom of those brackets.

The rear bolts through the cross member of the rear of the jeep.

The tank:

Normally there is a single bolt in the front middle going to a bracket again holding from the bottom of the body. Then in the rear, each corner is bolted by funny looking "z" brackets that hang down from the top corner of the inside frame rail / rear bumper / cross member. The tank corners bolt to that bracket on each side.

I have heard of straps, and common mods to the tanks mounting, I for example, have modified both due to the new bumper, and old brackets not cutting it.

I seriously doubt the body should need to come off bud... I would be extremely surprised if that is the case.

I will see if I can find you some pictures of standard install, but you should not need to take the body off for sure.

Well, I took some pics but won't help anyone here. They are hard to see anything. So, in preparation of lifting the body I took the tires off and lower the jeep to jack stand on the lowest setting. I then shown a flash light into where the gas tank and lo and behold I saw the bolts I needed to get at. I can get at them so that is tomorrow project. From what I can see the PO did nothing right on the install. Wish me luck and thanks for the help.

Looks like I now have a challenge. I need to locate a liquid check valve. The anti-tip over valve was not include in years but I am going to put one for the oh moment. I have located that valve. Now I need to find the liquid check valve. Any ideas? Any one, any one, Bueller, Bueller. I just did some reading and I think I will a couple of house off the outlets and put two filter on the end. That is what we did on the TJ that in running in KOH this year. His number is 4511.

I am wondering why you are so bent on a steel gas tank
Plastic tanks are much lighter and do no trust inside.
I would see why the tank is not in properly and fix that. but if the tank is good I would retain it over a steel tank.

The plastic tank in my CJ is concave on the top. Because it is concave on the top the gas gauge has never worked correctly. Also the gas tank has filled correctly and it over flows when I fill it.

I want the steel tank. That is why I am bent on the steel gas tank. Because I want it. I am not too worried about rust. I live in AZ and it takes a long time for something to rust here.

Update,

I won the auction on ebay and I am just waiting for the Liquid Check Valve (LCV) to show up. The price I payed was fair, considering there aren't being manufactured. I payed 28 bucks. I will being using a Roll Over Valve along with the LCV. I do plan on wheeling the CJ and one day, after many transformations, it will be son's Jeep. Now generally there is a return line that goes to the charcoal canister. That is also long gone in my Jeep. I plan to use a small K&N air filter on the line that is supposed to go the charcoal canister.

Is my plan feasible, and more imporantly, is it safe?

The Roll Off Valve that I am going to use is from Delorean Motor Company.

The thing is the shipping stays the same no matter how many I order. If there is anyone in the Phoenix area who wants/needs a roll over valve I will be ordering in 2 weeks. I finally got the tank out. It took me a bit but I had brain surgery and to rehab a little bit. Here is the one pic shows where some of my promblem are. What you can't see that the tank is concave on top. The pic is how the tank was hooked up exactly when I dropped it.

Now according to this picture I am missing a return like from the fuel filter. Not to mention the Liquid Check Valve. The roll over valve was included in my year but will be included in my set up.



My fuel filter does not have a spot to hook a return line. Could some educate me about the importance and function of this or can cap this this line.
