gas tank repair

I have an 81 CJ7 and the gas tank is leaking right about half way. I had to pull it out since I'm building a new rear bumper. I have yet to see what is wrong EX: crack, rust. Has anyone tried repairing a tank?

yes,I have repaired many tanks over the years for cj's,willys,motorcycles and other vehicles..You may have doubts but it has worked for me on every tank I ever did..Mix fiberglass rosin,pour it in and tilt the tank in different directions so that it can coat the tank..If you are letting the rosin run over any area where hoses attach then attach an air line to those orifices and apply only about 3 pounds of pressure..this will keep the rosin from plugging those holes..how big of an area you plan to coat will determine how much rosin you need to use but everywhere the rosin runs will get coated and decrease the amount you have so I always use a lot more than you would think necessary..If you want to just try to coat one side you might use a quart or if you want to try to do most of the inside you might want to use an entire gallon..Remember that it flows sort of slow so change the tilt slowly so it can flow and cover all the surfaces and keep flowing it over the areas you desire until it sets up so that it doesn't all settle in one place..This repair might sound odd to some but it does work.First time I tried it was on a 50 willys jeep that had a thousand little holes rusted in it.We put that jeep through hell after that,through woods,mud and lots of miles on the road and it never did leak again

Well it was a crack about 1/4 long. I wire wheeled it, hit it with a sander then applied jb weld to it. I'll check it tomorrow. I'm not a big fan of jb weld but I think in this case it will hold.

doubtful..I have welded a lot of fuel tanks for farmers over the years..Almost every one of them I had to grind the jb weld off of them first..on smaller tanks that I can handle easily by hand I just glass them
