Just picked up an 86 CJ7 4.0L....needs wiper motor, oil press. gauge, new pull controls for heater and vent and speedometer doesn't work(but the odometer and fuel gauge do). And I need to install a horn.

I am an electronic IDIOT but would like to learn/fix what I can on my own. The wires underneath are a rats nest that need to be gone through but I have no idea where to begin. I was trying to find illustrations or pictures of what it should look like. I can't even find a picture of a detailed fuse box for the 86.
If anyone has any advise on any of these issues, or knows someone in the St. Louis area that I can take it to that they trust with CJs please let me know.
Not kidding guys......Speak to me like I'm a small child....that has a head injury:confused::confused::confused:

If you can start by learning to read a wiring diagram you should be able to accomplish this.

However, know that rats nests usually come from the "learn as I go" wiring person...

Not at all saying you can't do this, just that you should be aware it will take you some time to do this right and completely...

So I would start by ordering one of these:

Jeep Truck Wiring Diagrams, Color, Laminated, 11" x 17"

Then you have to figure out what you want to accomplish... If you just want to clean stuff up, start 1 wire at a time... check what you just installed and hooked up is working or not as you go... If you want to re-route / clip up some wiring to make it neater while you go, ensure you are not faulting something else while you go. Sometime things look redundant and are, and sometimes redundancy is necessary within the circuit (like the alternator wiring in my older CJ)

I found a pretty good illustration of the fuse box a while ago. Let me see if I can find it...

That's a good diagram to have.

The Jeep Guru for the Jeep CJ gauges is John Strenk, look him up online. Add "Jeep CJ" to that search BTW.

When aftermarket gauges are sold, usually they come with all the goodies to get them operational. Like gauge,sending unit, lights, instructions, hardware, and a decal. This is so the gauge can jive with the sending unit. The oem type temp & gas gauge replacement is a whole different animal, but still you have to read the instructions.
