The gears are induction hardened producing a case harding. Induction hardening uses a current in a coil to heat the steel past it's transformation stage, then quenched rapidly with water. May be a deep as .100". The core of the gears are softer (toughness) and less brittle. Surface hardness increases the wear resistance of the sliding action of hypiod style gear. The sliding really is the change in loading of the gear tooth which can be seen on the contact patch seen when setting the gears in the housing using gear setting dye. The gears are then ground and matched in pairs. The pinion depth is measured and marked on the end of the pinion.
Matching grinding becomes more important with even numbered gear sets as mentioned earlier since they are in constant repeating mesh.
