1981 CJ7 4.2 auto Dana 300 transfercase Dana 30 and amc 20 with 2.73 gears (all stock), 1989 YJ 2.4 5 speed ax5 Dana 30 and Dana 35 with 4.10 gears, 1986 dodge ramcharger 440 auto, Dana 60 front and rear with 4.11 gears
I have a 81 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l auto with 2.73 gears. It has 31s on it now, and it won't go up hills on the road I live on. My other jeep is a 89 yj that I was thinking of making an off road toy (85%off 15%on) so the cj would be kinda like a daily driver when I don't take the car.

I want to lift the cj maybe a 4 inch kit and run 33s. My question is what gears would be best? From all the ratio converters I've seen don't start that high. I was thinking 4.10,4.56 with ox lockers front and rear
I don't do much highway driving with it. And I'll more that likely use it for light tails/mud.

Or should I build the hell out of the cj and use the yj for a dd?

4:10's would make a better DD.

Maybe if you still have the gear and locker in a couple weeks, ill buy it from ya

Thats the one I use all the time. When I was plugging in my numbers using a Tf 999 it got a bit pricey for what I wanted. I liked 4.88s with a 4 to 1 kit in the Dana 300 . That put the crawl ratio in the 50s and had me at 3000 rpms at 60 mph.

I thought that was pretty good for an weekend wheeler with the auto. Of course you have to add in the price of the tera low kit for the Transfer Case though on top of the regear.

this is one of the best calculators I know of. Gear Ratio Calculator

1 more point in case you havent opened up the axles and found out for yourself. The 2.73 ratio Cj axles used smaller carriers. You'll need new larger ones as well.

Yeah I know Pete. That's why I was planning on installing ox lockers in the front and rear

Gotchya. Seems a little exspensive to put Ox lockers in a street Jeep but if youve got it might as well spend it... :)
