Hello, this is my first post here, looks like a great forum for cj info. I am buying a '82 CJ7 that is in great shape for its age. I looks to be 90% stock with the exception of the front and rear bumpers, a 4" lift for a bit larger wheel and tire combo, and the soft top. It has the original GM151 power plant in it witch i do not know much about to be honest. The gentlemen i am buying it from put a brand new Rochester carb (identical to the factory carb) on it and connected all the emission control line back up, it starts and run good but just is not quite dialed in right. he has tinkered with it a bit as well as a couple of mechanics it is better but.....The mechanics both advised he pull all of the emissions stuff off and plug it off witch i am not above doing (it would certainly clean up the engine bay) but would it make it easier to get the timing and fuel mixture right or would it open up a new can of worms? I do plan on an engine, and possible Transmission swap, but not for some time so getting it running tip top is the plan for now. Any advise would be appreciated. Thank you.https://www.jeep-cj.com/forums/images/smilies/beerchug.gif

I can't really say I know anything about the GM 151 , but I know the AMC 150 was fairly under powered, and eventually the carburetor turned it into a gutless wonder. It wasn't until I got a Webber carburetor that, like the advertising said would give it a 20 % power increase and it really did. When I got the MSD Digital AL6 is when it really, ideally made it work best I would say.

Thanks, that seems to be what I am hearing a lot. i guess i am on the hunt for a new carb. Have a good one.

That’s the best that you can do: keep it in tip top running condition as is. Your money is better off in the piggy bank for a future swap. Welcome!

I'm another one that did the Weber carb and MSD 6AL and it's great.

Can you find out what the last guy did with the original carb? It might have a slightly different metering circuit and would be worth rebuilding that one if it still exists.

Hello, I did cheek with the guy for you but he sold it for parts already. It was damaged on the base of the carb and only good for parts. Sorry bud but thanks for the info.
