The recent issue of JP showed up and there is a great Quadra-Trac article. This is of great interest as I have a QT in my '79 CJ7 . This of course led to a number of other questions. One that came to mind is, has anyone upgraded there GM Turbo 400 3spd to a GM 700R4 4 spd or equivalent older version? If so, I was curious how was the adaptability to the QT and the AMCV8 (AMC 304 )?

The only adapter I know of for the 700R4 to the Q-trac is this one:

(P/N 50-2501) | Advance Adapters

I haven't used it and I don't know anyone who has. But I looked into doing this to a 70's Cherokee and that was what I was going to use.

Your prob will be adapting the t700 to the AMC engine. While it has a T400 they are not the same as a chev T400. The T700 is a great swap in. A CJ7 if using a chev/GM engine but not worth the effort for an engine that needs adapting as adapter front and rear of Transmission starts to add a lot of length and cost

Thanks for the info. Aussie, that was the big question I had, was bolting up to the AMC 304 . I saw on Novak that they have the Transmission /tcase adapter. I guess I will revisit the T700 idea when (not if) the AMC 304 goes and I need to swap it out for a Chev 350.

Thanks again gentlemen.

BTW if you want a 4 speed auto consider the AW4 from a cherokee, they can be built for bigger HP if required as they are basically the same as the A340 found in toyota including their V8 quad cam sedans

You can get around the needing a TCU computer with a few aftermarket shifter and end up with a full triptronic type of shift and the bennifits of a Overdrive auto

I am not aware of a adapter to QuadraTrac but the Dana 300 one is simply a spacer/clocking ring to address the slightly longer output shaft

There is nothing to adapt the QuadraTrac to anything but the original GM Turbo 400 (with OEM Jeep parts you can adapt any GM Turbo 400 to the QT), and the 700R4 with the Advance Adapters kit.

It is theoretically possible to have a machine shop make you whatever adapter you want but it won't be cheap.

One alternative to the QuadraTrac that is a bit more adaptable is the Dana/Spicer 18 . It has the offset front and rear outputs that match the QT. There are more kits to adapt it to more transmissions than the QT.

Of course, it's may just be easier to swap in a rear axle with a centered differential. That makes the choices for transfer cases wide open.
