Always Off-Roading Jeeper
I would start with a Haynes, if you really get into this stuff you will end up with all of them. Some contain info that others don't. There is a online factory service manual around here somewhere.

You can't beat the factory service manual, but a hanes or chiltons is good to have too.

- 1986 CJ7 - 258ci engine (rebuilt) with dual outlet header, stock T4 transmission, Zoom high performance clutch, Dana 300 transfer case, custom drive shaft w/TJ yokes, Dana 30/AMC 20 front/rear diff (Alloy USA upgrade) and Ox lockers. Jeep was originally a basket case, purchased for $250, and I have spent over a year rebuilding it in my spare time in the "old school" way, with attention to keeping it as stock appearing as possible, but making improvements where needed.

There are a few sites out there where you can buy or download more specific shop manuals for your model, but I found this site pretty useful. You can down load the entire service manual in PDFs by section. Lot of good info for CJ's, Scramblers or Cherokees. Hope this helps!

I found this website and ordered an original manual....they have manuals (original and reprints) for most vehicles.
