ON THE HUNT AGAIN
What's your opinion of the '74 CJ5 ?

I've always owned newer models and I'm concerned about frame issues on the '74. The one I'm eyeballing has a I-6, 3 speed. Haven't had a chance to inspect it yet. Looks stock in the photo.

I do know that '74 still had the thinner c type frame. It wasn't thicker or boxed until later years if I remember right.

Hopefully it still has the Dana 44 axle. Any areas I should look at closer on the '74 year model?

I always check body mounts, suspension mounts, steering mounts/brackets, especially if it's power steering.

If all goes well maybe I'll be back in the jeep thing again. :)

I love my 74, that being said though, you are right on the frame cracks. Though with time and effort you can "fix" that...

Mine has the no tail gate option and dual fuel tanks. Also a nice touch.

When I'm ready to change, I'll probably get a 7 for the room... but I'm going to keep the 5 or turn it into a "74 CJ7 " etc.

The frame HAS been a head-ache though! It's cracked on me a few times.

just keep a good eye on her.

The one I'm looking at appears to be stock, no lift. I plan on keeping it that way at least for awhile. I can go anyplace I want in a stock jeep for now with a decent set of mud tires and a winch/come-along for insurance. So I don't plan on stressing the frame. I may later decide to box the frame if the modding bug gets me.

Any other issues with the 74?

I can't think of any... My particular jeep has a lot of things to "fix"... Wiring, roll bar tie in, tranny swap, etc. But at that point its user customization.

I love my 74 for it's simplicity! Working on a early 70's vehicle (or older I suppose) is so much nicer for me than working on newer vehicles!

They were a good year range. For me in California, the smog exemption makes a big difference too for me in going out of the "intermediate CJ's" years... They're the largest smog exempt CJ5 . CJ7 's are all technically post exemption year (76) and though I could get a 6 or 8 or even stretch my 5, I am "comfortable" in it, though still want to lower seats etc...

Post some pics!

Man I travel, then locate a jeep when I'm home. I go look at it and it's either ragged or gone by the time I get there. I've got two leads on ones that are in great stock shape so we'll see how it goes. But of course I gotta wait till I get back.......

A 67 CJ5 , 77 CJ7 , and a CJ8 , in desending order of restored to needs work.
