Grandpas Jeep Re-Build. Advice needed.

I have pulled my grandfathers Jeep CJ5 out of the barn and have started the process of getting it back to running. The VIN number is 8305017 371987. All I can find so far is its a late 60's - early 70's model. It does have the Dauntless Buick 225 V6 V6 225. It only has 27k original miles. If anyone can provide some more insight that would be great.

I have removed the body from the frame, along with the steering linkage. My goal for this jeep is to sandblast and paint, replace suspension,brakes and most of the electrical and certain engine parts. I just want to have it to use around my property and the occasional trip in to town. Not interested in a restoration back to original, etc.

I am seeking advice on where to start to get the engine running before I remove it from the frame. I know I am going to need a new distributor and wires, but everything else I would like to see if it works before replacing as I am on a budget and not in a real rush to finish this project. Can anyone give any advice on the best steps to take in attempt to crank the engine? Also, the ignition was jerry rigged so I will not be working with a key.

I believe your CJ was built in Jan or Feb of 1971 and should be a 71 model. I would suggest you get a factory service manual (FSM) if you don't already have one. There are many specific test procedures for different parts listed in the FSM. A parts book would also be good even if you are not going to restore it as the exploded views will help. Many vintage Jeep parts vendors also reference their parts by the original part number. There is also a Chilton book for your model. Start your library. Good luck on your project.

If you are starting with the engine as your first step, I would recommend a few of the basics before you crank it for the first time. Looks like you have a Dauntless Buick 225 V6 in it. First, can you move the engine by hand? If so, check the oil. Is there coolant in it? Is it thick as grease? If not, and it is just dirty, change it along with the filter. Pull the spark plugs and check for rust on the plugs and inside the cylinders. I assume this Jeep has been sitting without running more than a year or two, so there is absolutely no oil anywhere but in the pan. I would take the distributor out (mark the position of the shaft at the base and the position of the rotor before removing to make reinstalling easier) and after changing the oil, slowly spin the oil pump with a drill. Use a large flat blade screw driver. Don't use anything that could come apart and fall down inside the engine! This will prime the pump and get oil distributed throughout the engine so that nothing galls if the engine fires. You can file the points, rotor, cap, clean up the spark plugs, etc. or now is as good a time as any to put in new. Obviously, you need to have adequate cooling if you plan to run it more than just briefly, and don't asphyxiate yourself if the exhaust is all rusted out.
Now, if you did find coolant in the oil before you started, you have a lot of work ahead of you. Don't try to start the engine! You will have to remove the pan and access just how much damage has been done by rust. I would just consider at this time that the engine needs a full rebuild.
