This is underneath the left rear of my 83 CJ7 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l beside the gas tank. The lines go to the tank . so is this some old filtering system? thanks

Yep, part of the charcoal EVAP. Those two specific components in the rear fender well or the liquid check valve and the rollover check valve. Then the charcoal canister was mounted under the hood on the drive side firewall. See this diagram:

So do you guys still use the valves and charcoal canister or have you removed all of it? What is needed?

I still have it, although I relocated the charcoal canister. Without any venting (vented gas cap) your fuel tank may experience vapor lock. With a vented fuel cap, you alleviate that issue. But I smelled gas fumes from time to time from the fuel cap vent and wanted the charcoal canister vapor system and a tight cap to avoid that issue. Also some states may require it depending on SMOG rules. I have fuel injection rather than a carb, so a vacuum line to the canister may be another concern to deal with if your fuel injection system doesn't have a provision for it. If you remove it, you need to block off the two ports on the gas tank to avoid fuel leaking when taking turns or getting at angles.

Well and thats why i started asking questions. I have a Carb and interested in fuel injection but also need the tank and sending unit replaced. It may be to much for me to do but understanding it better helps me ask questions to the mechanic i may have to find. Thank you!
