I'm putting together a Jeep on a diet and would like to keep the weight down as much as possible. I presently have a hard top and doors, but would consider selling them if a softop is much lighter.

Then again I plan on driving it trough the New England winters and am not sure how much, if any, warmer the hard top is than the soft top. I want the vehicle weight as light as possible but I don't like to be cold either.

I have never owned a Jeep so I don't have a clue here. Can anyone with some experience chime in?

I use to live in Boston. Keep the hard top and hard doors to use during the winter; you’ll be a lot happier with the HT over a soft top. Then pick up a soft top for the summer months. Out here in the Northwest (west side of the Cascade Mts) the winters are not as extreme as back East but most jeepers I know who have the HT take them off in May and run the soft top until October before they switch back.

I prefer a hard top for winter as well. I live in CT and the soft top is a pain when you want to zip up windows plus the cold will make it way in on the highway. The hard top is quieter and you can do some lining on the ceiling to help and also the door if needed. The weight is a good difference but the gas mileage savings is negligible. The hardtop will flow the air better since is does not flap around.

Thank you Kane and saddle Tramp,

That was my original thinking but a fellow I work with just got a fairly new Jeep something, and it is half hard top and half soft top and it got me wondering.

Never owned a Jeep before so no experience on this and I don't like the cold so your suggestions make sense.

Thanks,

Bob
