Have owned 82 CJ7, 258
92 YJ, 4.0, 5 spd
78 CJ7, 4 cyl,
Looking at 72 CJ5, 304, 3 spd
Is there a difference between the CJ7 hardtop and the YJ hardtop? If so, can the YJ top still be used on the CJ7 ?

yes there is. its all in the rear hatch. the CJ7 uses a latch style rear hatch that seals to the tailgate that folds down.

The YJ rear hatch is glass that doesn't latch and uses the swing out tailgate to close and hold the glass shut.

ill look for pictures to show the difference

Thanks for the quick reply and the photos. Is it possible to fabricate a piece for the YJ top that would close over the CJ7 tailgate?

Ayuh,..... I guess it depends on how Handy you are,.....

My 1st thought is, with enough creativity, resin, 'n fiberglass,....
Sure, it could be done,.....

you need a CJ hatch assembly. by the time you buy a decent YJ top rust free (yes they are steel) CJ hatch assembly with lifting struts (hardest part to find) and modify it you would have way more money in it than what a decent complete CJ top would cost with no modifications. also this is the wrong time of year to buy a hard top. come spring and summer when they are laying around people's garages and yards they just want em gone and sometimes cheap.

A YJ hard top can be used without modification. Only drawback is that you have to drop the tailgate before you can open the hatch.

but..... how do you drop the tailgate without opening the hatch since the tailgate latches from the inside?

The CJ7 I'm looking at buying has a hardtop with a front corner heavily damaged, and there is a YJ hardtop for sale locally for a decent price.

well depending on how bad the damage is fix that top. or if priced cheap enough the YJ top will work. may require some modifications to the hinge area but very doable if the top isnt an arm and a leg in price
