Hardware store riddle

I went to the hardware store to buy something for my house. When I saw what I was looking for I asked an employee:
"How much for 1?"
Employee said $3

I asked "How much for 12?"
Employee said $6

Then I said "I need 200 so I guess that would cost $9"
The employee said "that's right plus tax of course"

What am I buying?

HINT: There is no price break. These prices are what you would expect to pay at a hardware store.
If you want another hint give me a number and I will tell you how much the charge would be.

I think I got the riddle and I think we probably shop at the same hardware store chain, but I'm pretty sure you got ripped off! I purchased exactly double what you bought and paid the exact same price!

There is a big price range. If you really want to go cheep you could probably get away with paying 50¢ for 1
A dollar for 12
and $1.50 for 300

But you get what you pay for.

CJ PM'ed me and already got it right.
Anyone else think they know the answer?
It's not easy.

As a hint it is very common for people to buy double what I bought and pay the same price.

If you bought 2 and found out the store charged you more than someone that bought 1 then you should go back asking why you where overcharged because that doesn't make any sense.

Funny thing...

I was at the register and needed 4 but changed my mind and doubled it to 8 - still cost me $3. The next day I needed 5 and then changed my mind again doubling it to 10 but it cost me $6!

Whether you buy 1 or 2 the price is the same ($3)
You can buy 12 or 24 at the same price ($6)
200 or 400 would cost the same ($9)

I couldn't take it! I use the internet all day for work and research so I cheated and found the answer :o, I was leaning toward nails or something and was wrong....at least I am an honest cheater :chug:.

I wasn't going in that direction at all, but now I know. I too cheated and went to the local hardware store where they happen to be running a sale. I can get 9,297 for $12, but they're last years version.

Never thought of cheating!!! Thank you,

Don't worry, it's a short lived feeling. :chug:
