I have an 82' CJ7 in california with the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l /carter bbd and any smog related thing has been hacked off and I'd really like to drive this thing on the road but don't see that happening without a lot of money/knowledge. So I saw this 1987 Jeep Comanche $1000obo and was hoping there's some way to make it work but I figured someone(anyone) on here would know more than I would. So please tell me what you would do.

It would be the same as an XJ Cherokee 4.0 swap and a search should turn up several threads.

A caveat is that the '87 would have an obscure Renix fuel injection/ignition system. When they work they are fine. When they don't they are a pain in the butt. A later 4.0L with an OBD system from a '91-newer jeep is a much more popular and worthwhile swap. Renix was created when Renualt owned AMC ( French Jeeps!) and it is a combination of "Renualt" & "Bendix," who created the system. When have you ever heard: " Boy, those Renaults are the greatest things ever and I LOVE their electronics?" :D

Thank you for the help. My accelerator pump went out and I don't want to spend anymore money on this horrible carter but I wasn't sure if this would answer my problems. Thank you for letting me use your experience I want to learn as much as I can but right now budget is my priority so my CJ will have to stay on hold.
