Yup, I haul mine all the way across the street. Yuck, yuck, yuck. Well, not in February but in the few months of summer we have here. :(

I made a rear hitch insert that has adjustable height and mounted a Yakimma bar and kayak mount on it.

last time I saw a kayak loaded like that of course it was 2 of them on a
Isuzu rodeo I dodged one and straddled the other one dragging it 200 feet
on I-75 until it popped out when I was in the emergency lane hitting the grassy area and driving onward in my work van , not a pretty experience but a true story . :madjeep: :shooter:

I haul this one on a pair of 1 inch steel horiz bars with plastic side-braces clamped on. The braces are necessary to combat sideloads from 18-wheelers passing. I have to keep the softtop on for too much sun, so the top rack is pretty high.

Ha ha, I don't travel with it like that. That pic is of the first time I put it up there to see if it would fit because it's longer than the Jeep (17 foot canoe).
I use 2" ratcheting straps over the top, one fore and one aft. That sucker will never pop off. Been wheelin' on some hellacious roads and driven 70 on the highway with it on top.

Cworld, sorry it took so long. Basically its a HArbor Freight 2 inch hitch extender with a 1 1/2 square tube welded on top. Then a 1 1/4 square fits in that at different heights. Spreader bars welded to the square and a yakimma round bar mounted on top.

awesome thread. I LOVE seeing CJs carrying canoes & kayaks.
I have 2 kayaks I am looking to carry (obviously only one at a time)

I've hauled a wooden louisiana cajun pirogue a few times. Just under 14 feet. Usually under 50 mph and 15-20 mile distance
