Stranger allegedly slaps crying child in store - CNN.com

(CNN) -- A Georgia man allegedly slapped a toddler at a Walmart store because she wouldn't stop crying, authorities said.

Roger Stephens allegedly slapped a stranger's crying toddler in a Walmart store in Stone Mountain, Georgia.

Roger Stephens, 61, was arrested Monday and charged with first-degree cruelty to children. An incident report obtained from police in Gwinnett County indicated Stephens did not know the 2-year-old girl he stands accused of hitting.

The confrontation happened shortly before noon at the Walmart in Stone Mountain, a suburb of Atlanta.

According to the arresting officer, the child's mother said her daughter was crying as they walked down one of the aisles.

The mother said a stranger later identified as Stephens approached them and said, "If you don't shut the baby up, I will shut her up for you."

A few moments later, while the mother and the crying child were in another aisle, Stephens allegedly grabbed the girl and slapped her across the face.

Police said he hit her four or five times. "See, I told you I would shut her up," the suspect allegedly told the mother.

Authorities described "slight redness" to the toddler's face. Before he was arrested, Stephens apologized to the mother for striking the girl, the incident report said.

Stephens, a Stone Mountain resident, is being held by the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department.

Well If he had came up to me and said shut her up or I will, I probably woulda had a nice conversation with him.
If he actually hit my son, oh the beatings he woulda received.

I can remember being in the store with one of my kids and the wife and some one talking about our kid crying. My wife turns around and rips them a new @$$. I did not have to say anything. I just stayed out of the way you dont get between the wife and the kids.

Now if some one would have done that to my kid and I was there. Well I dont mind going to Jail for them. They would not me getting up!!!!

That is just so wrong! I had a come apart when my sons best friend was hit by his step dad.

Up until Bubba was 5, he was the perfect child at walmart. Perfect. Then he started whining and begging for toys. And had someone offered to hit him the other day, I probably would have considered it... ok, I wouldnt really. Maybe...

Here I go.

Rule #1: Dont hit a child in the face, God provided a better place.

Rule #2: The only time its ok to smack a child (which I do a tap thing on Bubba's chin) is for cussing. Calling mommy an "a hole" is NOT cool.

Rule #3: The only time it is ok to hit someone elses child is when you have permission to do so, and even then, be wary.

Rule #4: Dont condem the child in the next cart. You could end up with one.

I used to babysit my best friends 3 boys. We had a hell week with the middle one. He climbed on top of my car (I used to have a 80 something TransAm. It was sweet) and left scratches. Then after I got his <-BAD WORD-> off there once, he did it again while laughing. Well, I took him in the house and to make him sit on the couch until his mom got there. The little <-BAD WORD-> (most appropriate word) looked me dead in the eye and called me a bitch. I slapped him. And once his mom found out what happened, he had a red <-BAD WORD-> for a week. And a new sitter. That started my dislike of kids.


And yes, I broke my own rules.

All I can say is, if a stranger hit one of my kids, it would be on.
