I know modern engines are torque to yield and require replacement when pulling the head, but do you have to replace them on a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l ?

Those bolts are 25 to 30 yrs old, I would. Check out ARP bolts.

Supposedly this thing has been rebuilt by the PO. But I’ve found so many loose and or missing bolts as well as finding that the timing chain was installed on TDC compression stroke that I’m tearing it down and rebuilding it myself. (I trust my hands more than the PO). But I agree. Who knows what this person did.
Do it once....do it right. Lol
