Headers

Does PA have emission testing? If so most muffler shops (Midas) won't run straight pipes. They will insist on cats, might want to look at some free flowing ones from Summit if you have to add cats. If they are not needed just 86 this post! :)

I had to put cats on mine back then. It'll depend on how you have it registered ( basic registration / classic ) and what county you live in. PA as a state doesnt require emissions its left up to the smaller municipalities. I used some small free flowing ones from Summit. Probably the ones CJ is talking about.

Local guy is selling headers. Here is his add- Dyno max headers for 72-79 jeep cj, AMC 304 -401 v8, never used in the box with hardware and gaskets. Would these fit mu 84 CJ7 360 auto?

My son has in-frame Doug Thorley or Doug's (can't remember which one of the brands) tri-y headers on his AMC 304 CJ7 w/T-18 & Dana 20 . They fit really well and there is a lot of clearance around them. The one negative is the collectors are not completely above the bottom of the frame rail. However, it is spring over and is on 35" tires. The Jeep has run about every trail in California and the Rubicon too many times to count. The headers have remained remarkable free of major rock rash. They are a well built header w/3/8" flanges and I believe 14 or 16 gauge tubing and 2.5" collectors. For a Jeep I would definitely stay away from headers constructed with 18 gauge tubing and 1/4" flanges; unless you plan to frequently replace them.

I bought some Advance Adapters (AA) fenderwell headers back in 1983 for my CJ5 and they were very good fit and strong with 3/8" flanges and heavy wall tubing. They too remained remarkably free of rock rash. Not sure today's AA headers are the same high quality.

If your linkage is your biggest problem as was mine and headers are what you want, toss the linkage it's a liability anyway. Mine always caused problems at the worst time by pulling the Transmission out of gear. Cable conversions are available from ididit as well as Transmission mounted shifters from lokar and American shifter.
My puzzle fits in and above the rails using headman supercomp headers and 3" pipe over the crossmember on both sides but I did get rid of the linkage for an American shifter. there is always a way

I would think they should it does't say '84 because they didn't come with a V8.

If I decide to go with the stock exhaust manifold. Would any AMC stock manifold AMC 304 -401 work? Or must I look for a certain year or type?
