Help needed from a newbie....

New to this site and new to Jeeps. Picked up a 73 CJ5 with AMC 304 3 speed. It runs well but I found a problem with the frame (cracked).

I want to replace the frame and I am wondering will any model year CJ5 frame work as a replacement?

Secondly, I need to replace the cowl panel, but the only panels I can find say 1974 and later. I am wondering will a 74 cowl panel work on a 73.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm a noob too, but I believe any 72 - 75 frame will work. As for the cowl, I would assume the same.

both will work fine. 72-75 were very similar jeeps. The differance between my uncles 72 and my 74 are very slim.

how bad is this crack in the frame?

Repair is an option, and boxing it up while you're at it.

Stay away from 71 and older frames, as well as 76 and newer. They'll require much more work to use.

TDK is always an option if you have the cash to spend...

I found a new cowl that fits a 75 and I think I am going to give it a try, the price is right, so I can't go wrong.

The frame is cracked pretty bad and the previous repair was horribly done, the damage was behind the header (passenger side) about 10 inches behind the right side motor mount. The frame is actually "rolled in" about 3/4 of an inch. I am going to take it to a frame shop and see if it can be repaired, it must have taken one heck of a hit....

I have found another 73 and I am going to take a look at it tomorrow, the motor is out of it so I should be able to look the frame over real well, (lesson learned)....

Thanks for the replies....I will try to post pictures as I am just getting started on the restoration....
