So I hit a wall the other night. I've got the CJ almost all put back together. Yesterday's project was to finish the clutch linkage and bleed the brakes.

Got the clutch all sorted out. Started her up and mover her forward and reverse a few feet tonmake sure it worked. Went on to bleeding the brakes. After the brakes were done I tried to start it up it won't start. Just clicks at the solenoid. So I thought maybe the battery was low. Charged it up and it started up with a little bit of difficulty. Drove it about 25 feet and it died. Now it won't start no matter what just clicks. Tried jumping across the solenoid. No luck. Tried a new starter. Nothing. Tried running a cable from the battery positive to the starter directly. No luck. Checked and re checked all of the wiring and the grounds.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

i just had about the same problem with mine last week...mine was a bad connection in the ground cable where it goes into the block that bolts to the battery....i twisted it by accident when someone else was turning the key and it tried to crank

And that's what i initially thought so i double checked all the grounds.

Have you tryed useing a different battery that you know is good?
You could just have a bad battery, Just a thought.

I will try that Wed night when i work on it again. But i thought trying to jump it, plus the headlights all working fine and getting the clicking would hopefully rule out a bad battery.

If your going from battery to starter direct it has to be one of those two things.

Do you have a good ground strap to the motor?

The ground strap should go from the top of the motor to the firewall or our motor isn't grounded and things like your starter that need a ground dont have a good enought one.

Ok so maybe that's my issue. I put a glass body on but I don't remember a strap from the motor to the firewall. Will a heavy duty cable (ie battery cable) from the motor to the frame work? Anywhere specific on the motor?

Ok so if you have a glass body you don't want to run it to the firewall but to the frame. and anyware from the motor will work.

how about from the negative terminal of the battery?:D

No I would go from the motor to the frame. You need to make sure your motor has a good ground and the frame is the best place.

where do you consider the ultimate "ground" to be, if not the neg. terminal of the battery? :D the negative battery cable bolts to the side of the block.

there should, of course be a strap from the top of the motor mount to the bottom of the motor mount to ground the frame. :D

I consider the ultimate ground to be the frame that is what every thing ultimatly gets grounded to that is why I say you need a good ground strap from your motor to the frame.

what is the negative battery cable bolted to now??

Just take a spare Jumper cable and go directly from the ground / minus on the Battery to a clean bolt on the engine that bypasses everything..........sometimes you can check cables or straps but inside they are toast. If you have an ohm meter check your cables and grounds.

All car systems are grounded to the motor since that is where most of the electrical activity takes place. Secondary grounds to the chassis and another from the chassis to the body so that all your systems are talking to the ground at the battery. If you have a HEI Ignition system it is also a good Idea to ground the Ignition box and distributor back to your grounding path. Also keep in mind that wire size for grounds should be near equal to the positive side it supports. If you have the ability solder all connections.
Good electrical systems work more efficiently when you always use the rule of the "Path of least resistance"
