It has the original I6, 5 speed manual tranny and I know nothing about transfer case and diffs..
If someone is reading this please send me a message about how to figure out these things and I will get it straight
Driving down the road the other day, hit a bump and now all the sudden I have this horrible noise coming from my Transmission . Anybody know what the problem is. I was able to get back home, its unable to use 3rd gear but when off will shift through the gears. Makes the noise at idle in neutral, a but in 2nd gear, shaking the jeep apart in 3rd.....

While under the jeep trying to investigate I see the rubber boot near the clutch linkage to the Transmission is torn. Is it possible a piece of rubber tore off into the Transmission ? 3345cddb00852275759d477a49b9c4a7.webp

I also see that part of the linkage appears so worn it might not have much life left. 43750ceee16798b7f8264ddeb5acb83a.webp

Are either of those things my culprit? It still starts drives and shifts into all gears?
Just making that horrible noise at idle, a little bit of it during 1st and 2nd gear, a ton of it during 3rd then basically none during 4th and try!

How much clutch pedal free travel, do you have?
You want 1-1 1/4". No less and no more.
The boot ain't the issue.
You may well have broken an engine or tranny mount.
Make sure the fan didn't hit the radiator and the back of the cyl head is not hitting the firewall.
Also-Check the bolts that bolt the skid plate, to the frame.........
When did you last check the tranny and t'case oil levels??

Clutch pedal travel is just over 2 in but not different than before.
Eng and granny mounts look fine (I did replace the drivers side mount about 1k miles ago as it was broken).
Skid plate and bolts are fine as are the radiator vs fan and eng vs firewall spacing.

In 3rd gear while moving it sounds and cells like something is hitting the drivetrain. It also makes the noise a little while sitting at idle in neutral.

How do I easily check the tranny oil level? I'm not too worried about the Transfer Case level as I've not wheeled it much and hardly had the occasion to do and Transfer Case shifting.

Your Transfer Case level is just as important as your Transmission level. Even though you aren't using your 4 wheel drive, the gears are still spining and providing rear wheel drive.
Should be a Dana 300 Transfer Case the fill/check plug is on the backside almost directly across from the rear drive shaft. As on the Transmission unscrew it and oil should trickle out if full.

Also you listed your motor as V6, the 82's came with either a I6, I4 or a V8 I believe. So maybe a PO swapped in a V6 and a different Transmission as well. There are several sites to check your VIN, Morris offroad comes to mind.

Its the original inline 6, along with Transmission and tc.

Would low oil in the tranny or tc really cause a noise and problem mainly in 3rd gear or sitting at idle?
Yes its a T-5 Transmission

Low oil can cause lots of issues from improper lubrication. It's a good place to start.

Since it seems to be mostly isolated to 3rd gear, pull the Transmission tunner cover, than pop open the Transfer Case and see if anything looks torn up.

Now might be a good time to change the oil in both the Transmission and Transfer Case . Look at the drain oil for any metal parts and take a magnet and pass it around in the drain oil (use a plastic drain bucket) Then, feel around with your finger inside the drain holes for any metal particles.
How does the clutch operate? Smooth? or does it feel like there is a snag in the pedal while pushing it in? You may have a broken spring on your clutch disc, or the pressure plate may be damaged. Take the inspection cover off the back of the bell housing and look for any broken pieces laying in the bottom of the bell housing.

Could it be the throw out bearing? It was already making some noise just in regular driving.
I will check the oil levels of the tranny and tc but they were replaced just after I got the jeep.... So about 3 years and 10k miles ago.

You should be checking the oil level in the diffs, tranny and t'case every 2-3 mos.
For sure at each oil change..........

Put a wrench to the skid plate mounting bolts, to be sure.
In fact-Get under that jeep and put a wrench to EVERY bolt head and nut you can get a wrench on.
2" is to much free travel.
Check the oil level!

Forgive my dumb questions abound...

What kind of oil should I get for the Transmission , for the tc?

I popped the Transmission cover and nothing it sticking out as bad or wrong. The inner rubber shifting boot is torn up / worn out but as to be inspected from original never removed or replaced 37 year old rubber. In fact everything under the inspection cover looks to be intact and never molested.

LG - all the skid plate and eng Transmission mounts are good and tight.

Ok, Transfer Case is low on oil and very dirty with fresh oil so it is obviously part of the issue. Ill search the forum for the recommended oil and get fresh oil in there tonight.
Still need to check the tranny fluid but it isn't showing the fresh signs of leak like Transfer Case .

I'm sorry but after reading this thread it seams like nobody read this part and everyone is saying check your oil levels. It started when he hit a bump do you not think maybe that knocked something out of alignment? I would be checking mounts, driveshaft and rear end. IMO

Do did you actually open up the Transmission and look inside, or just remove the Transmission tunnel cover on the floor?
