Hey guys, Glad to be on here with you guys. I need some help. Went out to get in the jeep today, cranked it up and the engine just starting racing/ revving up? Taped the pedal no luck getting the monster to idle down? What could this be? It ran fine the day before. I'm no mechanic to say the least. Any idea's ? Thanks for your help

I would start by popping the hood and check all the carb linkage. Sounds like a spring broke or your linkage is binding or something.:(

Yep, Popped the hood. Checked the linked and springs. It seem to be working fine no binding and the spring still hooked up.

I am not an expert but it sure sounds like something is not working properly with your carb. Do you have a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l w/ a BBD Carter Carb? I had a Carter with issues and rebuilt it - still had issues. I just replaced it with a Weber and it runs like a dream. If there is not a simple fix and you want a lot less problems in the future - the Weber is worth the $300.

All that said - it may not be your carb. Get advice from someone who knows more than me.

Is the throttle plate open?

Is the choke plate closed?

I'm no mechanic, but it looks to be open?

you have two options at this point, become one or find one.:D

which is open, the choke or the throttle? The choke is at the top of the carb and the throttle is at the bottom.

this sounds like a broken vacuum line to me.

You need to fill out the profile, knowing you had a Weber would have gotten a different responce and if you are in Miami the choke is more than likely open, if you are in Moose jaw Saskatchewan It may very well be closed.

We promise not to tell anyone where your cave is.:D

i am having fuel issues as well so i am reading all the carb threads now

plus i have never been to Moose jaw Saskatchewan.........:D

Yep, checked that one.
My choke is staying wide open? What causes the choke plate to stay open?

being in Florida!

It opens when it gets warm. Do you know how to check for vacuum leaks with carb cleaner?

Yep, checked that one.
My choke is staying wide open? What causes the choke plate to stay open?

This technique is used widely by mechanics the world over BUT it does have the potential for ruining your whole day. The way it works is to spray carburetor cleaner , a very flammable vapor, on a hot, running engine. You can see how this could be an exciting way to spend some quality time in a burn unit. Find a fire extinguisher and don't just start spraying. You want to spray the carb base and the hose connections and, if possible the entire hose. It does not take a lot of spray on a leak to be noticed and don't spray into the carb.

the way it works is that a vacuum leak draws in the vapor and the idle goes up. I know it is already to fast. Did you look down in the carb to see what position the throttle plates are in?? If those don't close, the idle is going to be fast, start there.:D

IO, thank for your help! I did read up on it. I believe your right on with the vaccum leak deal. It does not seem to difficult, but safety first. I will let you know my progress.
Thanks again IO
