The Dana 30 looks like it has a Trac-Lok Limited slip carrier (may be different, would need numbers), the AMC20 is an open diff.

Ok. So its def an open diff then. I was told it had a locker in the rear too but it didn't look like it to me, which is why I asked.

Looks like the ratio is 2.27? 41 / 18? Ouch, are you thinking of upgrading?

It says 41-10 right in the top picture for the Dana 30 ?

It was tough to see in the pic, if it is stamped 41 10 then you do have a 4.1 gear set. I was just going from what I could discern from the picture.

They are stamped 41-10. I have a T-176 and was going to run 33s. I was thinking of doing 35s with the 4.10s but I don't want to have to do too much to my CJ to give me the ability to actually run them. I am doing a skyjacker lift and that wouldn't be enough to run the larger tires.

Yeah, that 10 almost looks like it could be something else. But you can't get the Dana 30 in a ratio that tall.

The tallest available was 2.73, correct? 41-18 would equal 2.28 gearing. That would be CRAZY tall  And I thought my current 2.73s sucked!

On a side note, my buddy, that owns the local jeep shop, says that AMC20 has the factory trac lok . . . . . But it looks nothing like what is in the Dana, which is why I was thrown off.

I don't see any clutch packs in the Dana 20 looks open to me. Did you count teeth on R&P gears?

Now on to the typical/over asked question: Would you run 35s or 33s with this set-up?

Definitely 4.10s

Rear could be a trac-loc. Factory Limited slip. It has clutch packs. Junk if pushed hard.

Front should be a Power loc by Dana. Still got clutch packs.

In 1988 I had a 1983 Scrambler with a AMC 304 swapped in T-176 /Dana 300 with the same 30 up front and 20 in the rear and 4.10 gears I ran 35/15 - 15 Super Swampers with no issues . I ran it that way for three years and sold it. Mud bogs were big back then, so this Scrambler ran quite a few of them hard.

Thanks for the help everyone.

I have read that the trac lok wasn't the best. Is there anyway to improve it? This is primarily a street jeep with light trails mixed in. Not a lot of trails open around here anymore. Should I rebuild the trac lok with better clutches or switch to something else before putting in the axles?

On the tire thing, I am unsure on size, just looking for some imput. Thanks.

Last Trac-loc clutches I bought ran $75.

I wouldn't waste my money on them any more.

All depends if you plan on keeping and wheeling it. Otherwise, let them slip. :D

Ok, I will just leave it alone then. I was just wondering if I should replace the clutches with new/better ones since I had it apart. This is a street jeep mostly and I am not to get anything to aggressive. I saw that people, with mustangs usually, replaced the clutches with carbon versions, which is why I ask.

Is there an auto locker that is good on both the street and light trail along with being simple to install?
:chug:

Lockrite makes a drop-in, but they require an open differential. Now you're looking at new differential. Take your pick. So any way you look at it they will need to re-shimmed best left to someone who has done it before.

The Powerlock is worth re-building. It is a heavy duty Limited slip.

If you don't off road hard, leave them alone.
