Hey guys. Anyone good with decoding fender tags?

Hi! My name is Adam, I'm from north georgia. Ive been reading on here for a good while now and getting answers to my questions, but I still have a few. I had a TJ for several years, but traded it. I have wanted a real jeep ever since. I finally got myself a rust free, solid 79 CJ7 with a AMC 304 /auto/tan Levi (Edition) interior. No tach or clock. Looking at the tag, it seems to have had an engine swap, but the other options seem a bit of an odd combo. I'll try and post a pic of it so you guys can see what you think.
I am really wanting to go back pretty much original at least with the interior and paint. Could it have been a Renegade or Golden Eagle ? Since it was Morocco buff? Thank you all so much!! I'm loving these forums! I'll start a build thread soon.

The to say this but I don't like the look of that tag. It's definitely been moved and cut. Have you had it registered yet, is it acceptable to your local Motor Vehicle Department? Your probable alright, but you never know some DMV's are extremely picky about Vin. Tags.

Oh I took the tag off and sandblasted the layers of paint away so I could read the numbers. Yep. Its registered.

Yea, know I'm paranoid, I was taught never to touch the vin tag, naturally cleaning in in place was okay. Mine was buried under layers of paint too. I used a cloth and acetone to clean it up. Since the older tags have raised lettering you can brush it with sand paper to expose the tops od the letters, or use a crayon. Why am I going on and on about this? Not long ago there was a big VIN Tag push up in Sturgis. Bikes that were legal registered were confiscated and we aren't talking about a few bikes either. Age makes me worry about such things.

Oh I know what you mean totally. No problem at all. It will be put back asap of course. I only took it off to make it easier to strip. I didnt want to get any sand in the engine bay. I actually tried acetone and some paint stripper before I removed it. Hahaha

I'm not as sure as I once was about this, but the tags are attached with certain approved rivets, rarely if never screws. Times have changed though, things seem more lenient in DMV land than they once were. Sorry I'm just thinking out loud. ........ thought! Make sure to check the hidden VIN number on the frame, I've heard it was on the hump at the rear passenger wheel well, then on the drivers side, then in other places. I'm sure someone on here will know.

I had a Chevy Luv that I had lifted and I ended up rolling it. I bought a 2WD truck with a blown motor and swaped out the bodys and what I did was drill out the rivits on my vin plate in the door jam and switched it with the vin plate in the 2Wd body and never had any problems with it and when I sold it they didn't either.

Well the actual VIN plate on the tub (around where the wiper motor is), has tamper proof style rivets in place. Those are a NO NO to remove to me anyway. But the data plate I am inquiring about is only held on by basic sheet metal screws as it was from the factory. Ive restored several old Chrysler's that were held on in the same fashion.

Same as the Fords. They have a VIN plate with the various tire, weight and VIN numbers. Then somewhere under the hood or in a door jam you'll usually find what they refer to as the body "buck" tag that'll have all your vehicle specific data and option info: Axle code, Transmission code, A/C, etc....

The buck tag on my '66 Mustang even shows the vinyl top, AM/8 Track radio and bench seat options.
