New to this forum, and have a question about driveshafts. Can I swap a front driveshaft for a rear driveshaft on my CJ if it's the correct length?

Technically....yes. The Ujoints are the same. But the lengths would be greatly different.

Actually, with my Transmission and Transfer Case swap, and a driveshaft off of another jeep, It would bolt right up. Why is the stock rear shaft so much smaller than the front shaft?

Because of the situating of the tranny and Transfer Case ...all of that moves the drivetrain farther from the front axle and closer to the rear axle.

I was. Hmm...when it gets light out I'll take a look at mine. I know my front shaft is pretty anemic diameter wise.
Edit: I just grabbed a flashlight and took a peak. My front shaft is tiny in comparison to the rear...diameter wise.

Going by the vehicle description you have posted, you aren't running a stock drivetrain. Perhaps the drivelines also aren't stock.

i believe the front driveshaft is more narrow than the rear is for clearance issues. but i could be wrong

I think you're right, mine is pretty close to the crossmember.

My 83's stock front shaft is a lot smaller in dia. than the rear.
As jim said, they both use 1310 u-joints.

Well it looks like I have a front driveshaft on the rear!!! I think I'll be changing that out this weekend.
