high idle

First post on this forum, so Hello to everyone from out in beautiful Maui. I was lucky enough to move out here and soon there after, find a 1979 CJ7 that was in great shape. Its runs great and all that, but I didn't know any history of the maintenance so I have started cleaning everything up and changing fluids, plugs, wires and so on.

I recently changed my spark plugs, air filter and the engine oil, I had to order wires. Now it is idling a little high and I don't know why as I haven't done much but the above. Its idling around 1000-1100 rpm. It was idling perfect before at 750-800 rpm.

The cj has a AMC 304 with the motorcraft carb. Everything looks stock that I can tell for know.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Look forward to talking with you guys as I start a new project,

I forgot to mention that I used the fuel additive Sea Foam as well. Maybe that has something to do with it...not sure? I use it in everything else and have good results.

Have tried turning the idle down to where it needs to be?

I can't imagine your idle being affected by what you've done, however, I've never used Seafoam (even though I have some sitting in my garage) so I'm not familiar with how it's applied. If it went through the carb, it might have cleaned out the jets but that wouldn't affected the idle. You might want to check the linkage and make sure it's returning properly.

Fatheringlaw has a4.3 v6 truck that was idling lower and lower to the point he had to keep his foot on the throttle just to keep it running. He eventually got mad at it and floored it to "clean it out" ran fine after it sucked the plugged up air filter in.

I went tinkering around with the carb this morning as I thought that had to be the problem. Sure enough, idle screw didn't do anything for me but the 2 screws underneath the carb on either side were very loose. To the point that when I touched them they wiggled in all directions. So i slowly tightened them equal amounts until my idle settled down to about 750-800 rpms. Runs like a champ now.

I forget what those 2 screws are called, but they are for the jets/ports right? Maybe the sea foam cleaned them out and they needed to be adjusted. I haven't messed with carbs before so this was fun and rewarding even though it was a minor job.
