Hey Guys,

So I just replaced the alternator, and power steering belts. Immediately afterwards, it started idling higher then normal. Not so high that you can't drive it, but noticeably higher. The idle speed will remain high even after driving it for a while. Sometimes if I restart the engine, the idle speed works it's way down to normal.

I've got a Throttle Body injection system on my AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , so I don't think i can adjust the idle speed manually.

My tachometer has also crapped out, so I don't know what the RPM is at idle.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

The inconsistent idle issue can be caused from the idle air control valve in the t.b.i. The idle can be adjusted on a throttle body, you should check with your maintaince info. for that system.

Thanks for the heads up! I'm totally ignorant, when it comes to TBI's. The PO put it in, and it's been problematic since the day I bought the CJ5 three months ago. Wish I had the original carb!

That said, the idle speed wasn't ever a problem before changing out the belts.

Turn your headlights, w/hi-beams on and see if that drops the idle down.
The old alt may have been pul'n the idle down. Not uncommon for a die'n alt to do that

After doing the test that Lumpy suggested, there is a lot of info on the Jeep CJ tbi conversion online. You probably should find out if it is a kit that somebody installed and if so who made the kit and what info you can pick up to help you with whatever issues you are having with it. I think converting to dedicated grounds and doing the "Team Rush Upgrade" helped out quite a bit.
