I see where Reese and HaulMaster make winch mounts that go in to a 2" receiver, so you can put it in front or back or not have it at all.

Anyone ever messed with one? I "think" I'd like a winch, but not sure I want it on there all the time.

We had one on a Brush Truck at the fire department I was with. They work, but I wasn't a big fan. Yes they can be moved from front to rear, but I feel like they stick out too much for everyday use. Also you will need a good lock if you leave it on the vehicle. If you take it off for everyday use, where do you put it. Your mileage may vary. Rod

+1 on this, ive thought about it before and i think that having buddy vehicles and a proper front mounted bumper-winch is the best choice. k.i.s.s. man

Not a fan. They stick way out when mounted, they are real heavy, and as said, where do you keep it when it's not in the hitch?

If your planning on doing some Offroading you put the winch on..when your not you put it in your garage..pretty simple to me..plus I like the look if a Jeep grill better without the winch..its only sticking out when your actually doing some serious wheeling..plus of course the huge benefit of being able to pull from either direction..

Well my thought was along the lines of davey25's. I think winches look fine up there for sure. But not sure if I want one there all the time. I guess starting with this would tell me how I feel about having one period. I don't know. I do appreciate the feedback though. That's what I wanted.

My main concern would be the side loads exerted on the receiver hitch. Straight pull either from the front or rear, I don't see much of an issue. I have an 8274 mounted to the front of my CJ5 :

I've considered having a smaller one that is hitched mounted for special occasions. Redundancy is a good thing some times....

My winch dits in a cradle and is wired with quick disconnects so it can be moved front to back comes on handy I haven't had any trouble with it sticking out I no it's there but a good idea to chain it so if a weld was to brake it stays put a good lock is a must

20x, thanks for the pic.
As for sticking out to far or not, it really depends on where and how you wheel it.
