Hey guys,

I wanted to get your opinions on painting my hood a contrasting color from the body. My long term plan is to replace the body eventually, but for now, I am repairing as much rust as I can. The jeep is currently dead-lined since I dropped the tank to weld on the rear tub. My hood (you can see the shape it was in on my profile pic) had lots of missing chips of paint and light surface rust. I have used a combo of chemical stripping, sand blasting and soda blasting to get it almost down to bare metal. I plan to paint it soon. Instead of trying to match the body color (Dark Blue), I thought about painting the hood a contrasting color. Something like silver, or maybe a gunmetal color. I will have to try and match the paint to redo the fenders though.

What do you guys think?

Well this is a pretty personal question / discussion....so you can't take offense since you asked it...but...I think a different color hood will always look like you had to replace your hood for some reason and that's just the one you found and bolted on.

I'd paint the whole thing while you're painting and be done with it. You'll be happy you did it all I believe.

My 2cts.

:D

...as a follow-on... My wife doesn't like the look of my original Renegade decals on the hood of my Jeep. I think it looks authentic / vintage. She thinks it looks faded and cracked. We're both right. :)

That said, I'm trying to eliminate political issues with regard to her AND the Jeep and if she believes a new Renegade decal is in order, then I may as well plan on it. But instead of ruining my "authentic / vintage / cracked" hood, I bought another one last summer and when I do this I'll take my own advice and paint the whole thing over so it all matches out right.

I would spray it with a good metal etching primer and leave it until you are ready to paint it with the right color.

I'm with MTN. Until you have decided on a color for the finished product, prime it and leave it. A work in progress is kinda what many CJs are at the moment. Shooting the whole thing, what you want, is the key when the time and money allow.

Yeah, I don't want to go to the trouble of painting the whole thing since I plan to get a new body in a year or two. The funny thing is I just stopped at autozone and they have a new rustoleum peelable primer product. After I coat the hood with the 2 part urethane primer I have, I could spray that stuff and then try whatever color I want and peel it off if it looks bad.

Nope - hanging it upside down on garage ceiling I suspect.

Wish I could have hung my original on the garage ceiling. Guess I could of, but it was pretty beat up. Some SOB years ago tossed a big hunk of steel shaft off an interstate overpass as I was driving under it. If he had been a fraction of a second slower I probably wouldn't even be here. I did hang it on the back fence for about 15 years as a remembrance. I was finally able to let it go.

Clear coat it as is. The rat rod guys love to use a nice satin clear coat over the original paint to preserve it as a time capsule. Then it's no big deal when you paint the whole jeep.

use platidip. you can spray it over your hood as-is, it comes in 56 different colors, it will "seal" your paint in itself, if it gets nicked or ding'd you can easily add more to fill the spot and you can peel it off when you are done.

i've done some various pieces of vehicles and always had good results. last two were the targa bar on my old 911 and the grille on a previously owned ford fusion. i have friends who use it on their race cars. it's relatively cheap, easy to apply and easy to remove.
