Seems like a lot of fuss when a clean stock cooling setup would have done the job just as well. Some folks say that the power loss through the fan is enough to make the change, but what about the added alternator load. I don't know, I guess I'm old fashioned. Good luck with your new fan set-up, folks say they are great.

In mine and 'Black Betty's case there was no stock setup when I rescued her. This 17" flexi fan was set up by the P.O. as a pusher fan

but before I full understood about air flow characteristics I reversed the direction and polarity of the fan in an attempt to gain control of summertime uncontrolable heat ups in excess on this old (1975) 360 only exacerbating this was the winch and cover mounted on the front bumper, to add to poor airflow on the front side.

The (now to me) obvious failure here is the fan blades do not fully encompass the cavity of the shroud rendering this fan useless. It was then I began reading about the Contour/Mystique setup and since I already had one controller I thought no harm in going all the way with it.

On the other had if 'BB' came with the stock WP mounted fan, and was keeping the motor steady and within conventional temperature limits I would've likely forgone doing this (to me) upgrade.

Its really not all that difficult to find a stock 360 fan/clutch. ..... no mater you have what you have and it works. Like I wrote above, I'm a CJ guy because I like simplicity, simple mechanical solutions that work. I will admit that I'd like to get the mileage of a modern day engine with all their electronic gadgetry in my CJ.

I hope this thread will pardon my remarks. I did not mean to infer that people must use the e fans or that they're superior in any way. I only posted what I did on my Jeep. I'm not here to tell others what to do on theirs. That being said, in the consumer desert I live in, there are no Jeep boneyards since Mac at Mac's Jeeparts passed away a couple of years ago :( He was a lifelong Jeeper and knew all models in and out. Also while I know the pulley fans and shrouds are available online I don't often like taking money from the hands of local folks, when I can help it. Respectfully this idiom is my own and if folks want to subscribe to it fine, otherwise no need for screed.

How do you wire in the resistor to get the two speeds? I have the resistor and I bought the pigtail for it with the two wires coming out. Where do those wires go? I have a flexi-lite variable speed controller if that helps. Thanks.

What is the componant just below the resistor used for? I don't see it in the schematic.

The wiring links to that resistor on the other side, I suspect it's thermostatic to detirmine tmeps in close proximity to the bottom of the Rad.

Thought I'd throw in this Power-Kool' that I installed...It's an 18" blade which is (as it turns out) exactly the size of the stock, metal fan...

I had to reverse the mounts to have it fit nearly perfectly with the shroud installed...

IMG_0167.webp

The end result is about the same as stock except that the average operating temp is 12* above my usual...Instead of a constant 165* it now runs 170-190
depending on in town or on highway...

If you want to go a bit more 'techie', wire the two fans together and install a Flex-A-Lite controller:

ContourFan019.webp

ContourFan038.webp

The result is all the benefits of computer control: Variable speeds, run after shutdown, select-ability. And does not draw a lot current to start, but uses MOSFET to 'bump start' the fan motors.

If you really need more CFM, here's something I was looking into:

Taurus 3.8L V6 2 speed fan and stock CJ shroud:

TaurusFanandCJShroud001.webp

Assembled:

TaurusFanandCJShroud002.webp

Seems like it would be a good combo, only would require a bit of trimming and fastening, along with some possible sealant. The Taurus fan really moves the air. Next bump would be to the Mark VIII or V8 Thunderbird fan. That one is a beast and may be difficult to fit.

Having the premium controller makes it nice and simple but in my case I was long on time and short on cash, which is why I rolled my own. On the other hand, having built it myself should something go wrong, I can address it myself with the practical knowledge gained in building it. :)

That's a sweet loking setup Gutthans, ausgeseitnet :chug:

I like this idea. Less wiring, one relay. Is it fully auto or is there some user input?

Over the years I've seen a battle of words with which was better, O.E. pulley fan, Flex a lite (or other new fan) Ford Countour double e fan, Taurus single e fan. I'm beginning to suspect that there is no single solution, none better or worse to keeping our V8's (and other motors) cool and within limits. All that being said the Contour/Mystique setup that I've got on mine has been working fine for over a year now.

I'm not putting your setup down Gus, but I like the Flex a lite controller. It's kind of pricey at $105 but has alot of good reviews. I believe the wiring will also be much easier. I do like the ford dual fan setup. It's a near perfect fit.

Not at all a problem, heck if I was flush when I did mine I likely would've gone the Flex a lite controller myself. I was releived later when I happened upon a discourse my a Jeep sage or two in another forum that made some valid points that led me to approach it how I did but have been pounced upon by others that went a different way. :p

Everyone has a favorite...but it's also true that everyone has 'preferences'. I like to experiment a lot, and I look for a setup that's

1. simple (fewest parts)
2. effective (does the job asked)
3. available (now AND later)
4. fixable (in the rain OR on the highway)

So if it looks decent and gets the job done...I'm good.
