How do people afford to own a CJ and not do their own work? My Jeep is just like my Harley(or getting that way the more I do to it)

Just funnin

I have to do my own work...I have no choice. Besides, there are very few things I will farm out to a shop on the CJ. The newer trucks we have...Thats a different story!

Maybe thats why I rarely get to drive my Jeep anymore! :(

i do all my work on all my cars unless i dont have the tools to do it. that is mostly stuff like doing a timing belt on one of our hondas. as for the jeep no one touchs it but my wife and i.

:dunno: They have better paying jobs than I do

Well said for most folks paying somebody is actually cheaper in the long run, if you factor in down time, tools your time etc. For years I had to have a reliable 4wd for work. Some of which involved working on heavy equipment in the field so I am no newb as far as workin on stuff but If you know what you can and can't do some times it's just wiser to have somebody do it. On the other side of the coin with your own pride-n-joy jeep, hotrod ,whatever after so much paying somebody else it just becomes "the jeep or hotrod" instead of "my jeep or hotrod that I know every inch of intimately and that one bolt on the bell housing needs the six sided wrench to come out cause it is a bit rounded" Isn't that what this forum is about If you have to you know what to do own your own?
:chug:

My vehicles do not go to the dealer unless it's under warranty. The warranty ran out on the CJ years ago.

I don' do tires.

Too many poor repairs at dealers.

I'm old school - if you want it done right, do it yourself. Get the factory manual. Use the Internet, you're not the only one to have that problem.

But a a man's got to know his limitations. . . (thanks for that one Clint)

I have a great job and I still work on mine I guess some people are diffrent:chug:

I have to work on my own, and I choose to as well. Anything that I am uncertain on doing, I know someone who can do it, or I learn. I have a decent job, but I can't afford to pay someone to do things for me.

I agree with 73CJ.
If you do it yourself you know how it was done. (hopefully the right way)
Plus I enjoy working on it.:chug:

there are a couple of things that I would do only in an emergency, glass and radiators.
but only because I have had disastrous results at least once in the past.
If you just want to drive it? thats cool with me. I want to own it. I want to know how to adjust the vacuum rod in a Carter 2 bbl. and what color the wire is that is supposed to go to the temperature gauge on a dark and stormy knight, what size socket do you need to dismantle and re assemble the wheel bearings on a 79 CJ, or an 81CJ7? It's fun.
If the getting dirty part isn't what you are into, enjoy what your doing.

And of course there is always the option of buying a Hummer.

Uh, yeah,
garage.webp

Lol, I am in the middle of spring over and regearing diffs on CJ007 and the YJ a motor swap. I am doing the CJ but the YJ I gave to my son, so that one is getting paid for so I can focus on mine.

I UNERSTAND YOUR QUESTION!!!! I am trying to find someone in my area who can do some frame and body welding etc., and its been almost impossible. I can do basic repairs, but I know my limits. I contacted thejeepshop in Glenmoore Pa and they started firing astronomical prices @ me without even seeing the jeep.(This is not a cheap shot @ thejeepshop because I've seen their work and it's outstanding) I need to find a true jeep enthusiast, and not a jeep capitalist. If anyone can suggest someone outside of a chain repair shop, preferrably someone with a small garage who works on jeeps in the south eastern pa region that understands a working mans budget please let me know? My email is breezelife7@hotmail.com, just in case I miss a reply on the forum.

I do what I can with what I got. If I don't know how to do something I call someone who does and I watch and learn. And if that fails i get on the forum or I find a shop that will let me watch them do the work. If that fails... Well I'm sure you will hear about it so you can tell me what to do. :chug:

But I do half to admit my OCD won't let me touch brakes I worry too much even though I was the fastest in the automotive class to do a complete brake job. Everything else I'm ok with

Are there any Jeep / off road clubs in your area? If so, they will likely know where to find what you seek.

Aargh! My limitations are catching up with me.
I can still do the work topside, but if it involves crawling under I'm sol. It's kind of frustrating, knowing what needs to be done, how to do it, and not being able to get there. That said, the old girl gets some stranger's hands on her occasionally, but I won't take her to a shop where they won't let me watch.
Afford it? What does that mean?

My opinion is jeeps are built not bought! That being said i have my jeep sitting out side of the shop right now while i do the drywall and i have people stoping to tell me that I need to take it to Son Of a Jeep here in Panama City to have him finish it for me.
I couldnt stand the fact that someone else touched it much less finished something that i have working on for over 2 years

I had to teach my self how to weld, not great but i can stick to pieces of metal together

The way i look at it is if i can attempt to make it then it can be done

OK im off my little soap box now

There's no way in a million years I would have ever been able to afford this Jeep had I not been able to do most of the work on it myself.

And interestingly enough, I barely knew how to change spark plugs when I first got it. After almost 20 years of working on this Jeep I can rebuild everything from the engine down to the axles. I swear I've become part of this thing.

i dont let anyone who doesnt own a jeep hold a wrench near it, so no mechanic shop is going to touch it :D

Bingo, exactly what I was thinking. My concern is they won't take as much care as I would in doing the job right. Most of the time their attitude is "it's just an old Jeep".
However, I do know my limitations.
For one, I don't know how to weld but I have plenty of friends who know how to.
