How to install fuel filter on sending unit

Hey y'all I am replacing my fuel sending unit and was wondering how to get the filter to stay on the pickup tube on the sending unit. Not sure if they sent me the right filter or not but the hole on the filter is larger than the tube and it slides on and off really easy. Is there a trick to this or am I just an idiot?

It is for 20 gallon stock plastic tank from 83 CJ7 .

I don't run a tank filer sock (they are a PITA to maintain), the engine side filter will work, you just have to change it more often...

Thanks CJ, I am planning on converting to mpfi at some point in the near future which means inline pump close to the tank with a filter before it I think. Will that filter be sufficient to protect the inline pump so I wouldn't need to install the filter on the sending unit? And if I don't install the filter I guess I need to put some fuel line on the sending unit so it reaches the bottom of the tank right? thanks again for the help.

Figured it out, there is supposed to be a small o-ring in the filter (or on the tube?) to hold the filter tight to the pickup tube.

Just run the mfrs recommended items...

You could run one of those see-thru gas filters prior the fuel pump so it can catch that and gives you a visual on just what is in there, plus most of it won't get in the fuel pump. I helped me once where I noticed water in that filter from a previous fill up and was able to figure out why it was running so crappy. The fuel injection setups use a huge filter that doesn't use a return line on the filter and they are located prior to the pump to protect it.
