Hey there, I just converted my '83 CJ7 to Howell EFI, runs great, except that it has developed a stumble from a start after it is warmed up, and it is getting worse. Is fuel pressure supposed to stay at 12 PSI when accelerating? 'cause it's dropping to 5-6 PSI...:dunno:

What fuel pump are you running and where is it located?

Have you contacted Howell about this problem? They have great customer service. ;)

The pump that came with the kit, HED PN FP 257. Yes, I sent them a message last night after driving up the hill (Running Springs, CA elev. 6488) bareley made it home.

Oh, it's mounted on the pass. frame rail next to the Transmission .

The fuel pump that came with the kit worked just fine for me, but the fuel pressure must remain constant thru the rpm range. If it is a efi problem, I would think it would be sending an error code, but not always. Your problem might be an ignition issue, like it will not advance correctly. Contacting Howell is best done during their business hours on Michigan time Mon-Fri., I have never had any luck e-mailing them. Another thing is to make sure you are getting full battery charging voltage to the fuel pump during operation. if you ever have to replace it I would recommend an Airtex E8094, which is designed for the low pressure t.b.i.

You said that your pump is mounted by the Transmission , it could be getting to hot and trying to vapor lock the pump. I had problems like that with my setup, and you won't get any codes. Next time reach in there and see how hot the pump is. I also was having trouble with the steel fuel filter that came with kit. It too, was getting so hot it would vapor lock. Just my thoughts.

Howell also says to mount the pump as close to the tank as possable and at least half way down. Maybe the pump is to far away it's having trouble sucking gas that far.
I have mine mounted on the gas tank skidplate.

With the external mounted fuel pump, the line between the fuel pickup sock and the fuel pump is quite critical. The sock(if there is one) should be unabstructed, the hose coming from the fuel sending unit should be in good condition with no cracks. The hard line from there should head down to the filter then the pump which should be mounted as low as possible to create a siphon effect to get the fuel to the pump. If the pump doesn't get enough fuel it will burn up. A proper venting system in the fuel tank is also critical. The more fuel you can keep in the tank also helps.
