1967 cj-5
About 2 weeks ago I bought a 1967 CJ5 and finally towed it to my house and the guy I bought it from didn't have the key is there any way I can start it without it if not what part or parts do I need to get

This is a long shot, but being a old jeep, the ignition bearings maybe completely worn down. If so, you maybe able to start it without the original key. Maybe worth giving it a try, before ripping out the upper column assembly. Good luck!

% minute job for someone who has done it before, longer for those that hasn't. Reach in under the dash. Find the ignition switch. The front chrome ring is spring loaded. Push the switch toward the dash. Turn the chrome ring, it's a bayonet type mount, the ring will come right off and the switch will fall out. .......

Once you have the ignition switch out it is very easy to hot wire. Once you've done it you will never trust your older CJ to remain in a parking lot at night again. I honestly don't know if you can get just a lock cylinder, you probably can, but I know that it is easy to find the whole switch with a key and lock installed. You might even try a junk yard.

CJs disappear real fast around here. A friend of mine lost his CJ5 at an off-site airport parking lot with substandard surveillance systems.

A good, keyed battery cut-off switch, located in a difficult-to-access spot is one way to slow down the badguy.

Mine had an alarm when I bought it. The alarm failed open, so I couldn't silence the alarm, nor could I start the Jeep. I had to cut the wires to the horns and bypass it until I could rip it out. Eventually PO issues forced a new wiring harness.

Rock Auto (RockAuto Parts Catalog) shows cylinders and keys available for less than $20.

A hidden kill switch that cuts the POS(+)to the coil and a lock'd hood. has saved my Jeep twice in the last 30+ years.

Wow! Has the crime level in Seattle skyrocketed in the past few years? I lived in Harbor Steps, and Eastlake from 2005 till 2011. Never got broken into, let alone have my CJ5 stolen. Maybe I was just lucky. Did your friend ever get his CJ back?

No, he didn't get it back.

I'm not sure about crime stats, but his Jeep was parked at one of those parking lots close to Seattle International Airport, while flew on a business trip... so we're talking SeaTac, which, even while you lived near me, was place dripping with drug addicts, prostitutes, petty theft, etc; also one of the Gary Ridgway's (Green River Killer) favorite hunting grounds because many people there will do anything for a quick buck.

SeaTac is pretty far - and different - from Eastlake and the Harbor Steps.

Given those lots don't funnel patrons through a secure point, anyone can walk in amongst the cars when it's busy wait for an opportunity to hotwire a Jeep with a soft top and drive off. Heck, even a person with a tow truck could show up with some fake paper work and probably get two or three desirable cars by hitting two or three lots before the cops and community figured it out.

I have a similar problem to the OP, and need help.
84 5 speed with steering wheel locked and ignition in off position.
I broke my key about 4 months back (not in the ignition), but she starts without the key so I wasn't too concerned... Until i got the wheel locked.
I can't get the cylinder to "on" to unlock the wheel, and I can't remove the cylinder with it in "off" position.
Any Ideas how I can get the wheel unlocked (I have tried brute force) or the cylinder out, so can have a new key made?

Thanks!

Thank you. I almost started a new thread, but since it was so recent, and the title so seemed appropriate for me.

Man that sucks! I guess it's in Albania by now. :(

I've always thought the worst thing that could happen is somebody steals your stereo. If they did take the CJ, it would be kids taking it for a joy ride, and the cops will find it in a ditch somewhere the next morning. I never thought a CJ would be valuable enough for car jackers to go through the process of filing down vin numbers, and putting it on a boat to some third world country. We're not talking about a Ferrari here, but I guess i'm wrong about that.

I just don't remember Nicolas Cage stealing a CJ5 in Gone In 60 Seconds. ;)

the round thing at almost the 12 o'clock position is what locks the steering wheel. It raises into a "cog looking disc" (second pic)

but once you have gotten that far into the column , go ahead and replace the lock cylinder and inspect turn signal cam, and the cancel cam.
