Engine I LOVE my Inline 6!

I don't know why the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l Inline 6 doesn't get more love. It's just a rock solid engine. It's got great low-end torque, and if it's tuned/geared right, you can comfortably drive at 60mph. Anything faster, and I'm worried about my rust bucket breaking apart. With the spark plugs on the opposite side of the intake/exhaust, you're not melting wires, and the design frees up so much space in the engine bay, so you don't have to unbolt a fender to access it. In my humble opinion a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l /T-176 /Dana 300 is one of the best drivetrains on a CJ.

I agree with a few differences. I'd say best combo (not factory) would be the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l ax15 Dana 300 . The ax15 can be found behind the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l in early YJs up through 91.

That’s fine if you are shifting into 5th, but sounds like jzak is doing well with only 4th. I could probably use a 5th gear because I’ve actually done about 85 in mine with no problems, I’m more the 60 - 70 usually also.

I use 5th all the time. When my T-5 dies it's getting an AX15

I hear ya. I could use once in a while, just not something nagging at me even close enough to find and change out. Mine goes down the road @2500rpm and 65mph so I’m quite good with that.

The AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l is one of the strongest and best I6s ever produced. It is a work horse!

Yeah, the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l /AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l is great because it simply keeps going.
But, that’s about all it does…keeps going.
However, this is good on many levels.

It's a great engine for flat Landers and trailer hauler. It gets tired quick on the east west roads of Colorado. And even though it keeps going, it may be at high rpms and slow speed on I70. They are a great engine. I just don't think it is for everywhere. Just my $.02
