New guy here from So Cal. So I am first time jeep owner as of yesterday. Bought a 1979 CJ5 . AWESOME. Started it right up and drove it up and down the street, slowly.
I towed it home, and started looking at everything.........

Supposedly engine is a 360 and it has power steering. Tranny is 3 spd.

Well the flywheel is half way exposed underneath. Somehow. WTF. I will have pics tonight to show off this beater, and my new headache.

I guess I need to figure out how to pull the tranny and get some advise form the experts.

there is a sheet metal cover that covers the bottom half of the bell. you just have to find one but it should not be a major problem.

If it was easy to own a CJ everybody would have one.

That is great to hear! I need to find a local jeep expert out here to help me figure out what everything is on this jeep.

I just noticed that my passenger side JEEP logo only says JEE Bondo, hate it.

Also if you look on the side of the block under the manifold it will tell you in big numbers what motor it is. AMC 304 360....

Right. There should be two inspection pieces that essentially cover the lower half of the bell housing opening. the engine covers the upper half where it bolts to the bell housing. You will see the screw holes along the lip of the bell.

Jim my 86 CJ7 has Joop on the side of the tub.

I would have to have verification that there is no evidence of a fuel filler hole on the other side before I believe it's a CJ tub
It's easy to install a CJ tailgate on a YJ tub and cut a new filler hole
"JOOP" has always been the big giveaway

It's called a dust cover shield.

I will have to get a picture of the back with the lisence plate off and a picture of the inside finder well. I'm 99% sure it's a cj tub I bought it from the original owner and it has never been pulled apart. So for the 1% the guy could have had it changed over and not told me.

There is a long standing explanation for this. Ive heard the dyes that were used to stamp the "Jeep'" wore over time and the inner part of the "e" was most susceptible to wear. I cant remember if my 85 is a Joop or not. I'll check tomorrow in the light when its not raining.

Don't worry about it, it is a common misconception... The YJ body can be put on a CJ frame by only modifying two mounting points.

Dont worry , common mistake. Went out in the rain and felt up my Jeep. My 85 is a Joop. Noone wouldve swapped this tub on. I put the diamond plate corners on myself also. No hiding anything. I think theres a thread about it somewhere?

I should have known better, I put a YJ tub on my 84. Duh
