I have a '76 CJ with an '81 drivetrain. Had it for about 18 months. Often smelled like exhaust after driving (even with everything open). Carter BBD carburetor was rebuilt, did team rush upgrade, replaced PCV, fuel filter, etc. Engine now runs extremely well (except for that characteristic old car exhaust smell). I took a chance and installed a catalytic converter (walker 15036 ~$56) and shorter muffler (walker 17611 ~$34). Squeezed the catalytic converter and exhaust between the Transfer Case skid plate and rear axle (I have 2" OD pipes , shortened the down pipe and clamped everything together and added a 5" exhaust tip cut at a 45 angle took about 90 minutes). NO MORE SMELL! If I had to do it over I would choose a muffler with a smaller width (like the 17604 as I had to tilt the 17611 muffler slightly to clear the drive shaft. There was a horrible acrid smell the first day the converter was installed (I'm assuming while it was getting seasoned) but it was all gone the next day. Inexpensive fix to make the Jeep more pleasant to drive and best change I've made to date.

When going down the road it's always easy to tell who doesn't have a cat converter or non functional one. Glad you have one now
