IRS Demanding Four-Cent Delinquent Payment from Midtown Carwash

SACRAMENTO - An unexpected visit from the IRS?

That's exactly what happened last Wednesday at Harv's Metro Carwash in Midtown.

"I come to work, and my manager says, you're not going to believe this. A couple of IRS agents just came in here demanding payment for back taxes,"said carwash owner Aaron Zeff.

And even more incredible - the amount.

"I looked at the letter and I couldn't believe what I saw. The number was astonishing. Four cents," Zeff said.

Coupled with late fees and penalties - coming to a total of $202.35.

"If we knew anything about it, if we received any correspondence we would've immediately addressed it," Zeff's attorney, Ashley West said.

They only learned about the delinquent debt this week, West added.

A former IRS investigator told Fox 40 that they send out notices for payment for one year, before any revenue officers are sent out to collect.

And whether it's a half-million dollar debt, or a mere nickel, the investigator said... failure to pay, is a failure to pay.

"They always pay their taxes, they've never had any issues like this come up," West added.

Zeff confirmed they did receive notice from the IRS...

"I have a letter from the IRS just from October of (last) year, stating that my returns have been filed and my tax balance is zero," Zeff said.

Car wash companies are regulated by the state, insuring that taxes are current and filed each year, he said.

As word of the missed payment spread...

"Oh it's been hilarious. People have been coming, like, would you like four cents? Help you out with your little bills...," cashier Ana Makhely said.

In jest, Zeff says that the agents had another motive...

"The good men and women of the IRS said, let's go down to Harv's car wash and get our car washed," Zeff said.

IRS Demanding Four-Cent Delinquent Payment from Midtown Carwash - KTXL
For the last five or so years I end up owing the state of GA about one or two dollars. I forgot to pay one year and I called them up asking what I needed to do. The rep. looked up my SS # and said she showed a zero balance. I was told if it is less then a few dollars they zero out the account as it is not worth it to pursue. Sure hope I don't get the GA tax people on my :censored: some day. :)

2 years ago, when Stan and I were separated, and I was extremely pissed off, I filed separately. Left him owing the IRS $14000. We redid it last year, and it went down to $8000. Its damn near paid off and with this year's refund, it will be done.

I smile everytime I think of that... $14000.... :D

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average IRS tax collector earns $25.53/hour. [source: http://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes132081.htm] That's not a bad wage, but adding in payroll taxes, health insurance, office overhead, mileage, retirement, the cost of stamps, and other expenses -- it sure seems like a poor return on investment.

My $0.02 (though I owe a LOT more this year)

-Glen

But - do you owe just $.04? Can you imagine the IRS going after your for a nickle?

Well, never mind - I can as it's right there in print... :)

Next time you say "my 2 cents worth', be careful! It could cost you hundreds! :(

I think it's total B.S. that the Infernal Revenue Service can let Timothy Geithner, Tom Dashell, Charlie Rangel, not pay their taxes on time.
They don't ask them for penalty & interest, becaus it was a Honest mistake. Yeah right.
Yet I get a certified letter threatening to levy to account of my 10yr old daughter for non-payment.
Ya know it's not like she's knocking down a six or seven digit income! ;)

Governmental favoritism... Not supposed to happen, but it does every day. Our services are more corrupt then the Chicago or New York political system during prohibition.

Oh, I'm sorry - their not corrupt, it's 'Lobbyist Money'! Yea! Right!

i am in a world of trouble this year, because i didn't file last year like a moron, i still haven't filed this year and i'm not looking forward to it

It's a damn good thing your not a 10yr old girl!

I know this will sound strange to some but I like to owe them money. If I owe them it means I got a no interest loan from the government for a year for what ever the ammount was. If they owe me it means they used my money for a year and paid me no interest. This is the best way I have found to rationalize what I have been told is an unconstitutional system of taxation.
For those who have not figured it out a tax return check is not a gift from the federal govt. unless you are a welfare case and get back what you didn’t put in. It is your money that you should have not allowed to be deducted in the first place.

All I have to say is if Obama had wanted that car wash on his cabinet then they would have leave them alone.:D:D:D

It was a feeble attempt at humor.;)

I spent 30 minutes on hold with them yesterday. I am going tomorrow to pick up my tax papers from "Mr I am a real tax man and know what I am doing, not H&R Block." Our monthly payment (toward that $7000 we are still paying on) is due next Friday, so I called to ask if we could put off that payment because our 'refund' is enough to pay it off plus some. Yeah, right. Did you know that it can take up to 12 weeks for them to process a return? That is what I was told yesterday. Therefore, I have to continue to make payments until I receive correspondence from them. So I asked if they were going to refund any overages and he damn near laughed at me and said it could take up to 6 months to receive that.

WTF!!!???!!!???
