Ideas to Build Dune and Mudder Jeep

Ideas to Build Dune and Mudder Jeep
Hell go all out find a 3/4 Dodge Diesel 4x4 truck with a auto and swap the hole drive train over you would need to stretch the wheel base some. I have seen people get a 1000 horse out of them. You would have one bad *** rig. Would be right up your ally Mopar guy. Just saying :D

I thought about that when I was looking into a building a mudder out of an 86 dodge short bed...A lot of the people I talked to said Diesel isn't the best choice for a mudder because you want high revving RPMs and wheels spinning like mad to sling through the mud, monsterous torque does no good if your slipping...and also they said, and I quote...Make sure there is a bottom to the hole you are going through, because that is exactly where you'll be going.

I said that because I tend to think 4wheeling where torque is king so instead go with a Hemi and 3/4 or 1ton running gear.

Hmmm, built jeep tough with dodge stuff.

Yeah, I was thinking somewhere around like 5.75 or whatever I can get close to that. My truck has 4.56 now, so in my head I need to go lower even than that for a toy.

Well, they are both owned by the same company.

My swap seems to be working well so far. Michigan dunes ran the old cut boggers aired down too 15 psi everywhere else the bfg's.
Power could be better but I drive it everywhere so stock 440 power is fine. But the 440 source has stroker kits for 1995.00 complete.
Engine,Transmission ,Transfer Case swap was easy. exhaust was a bolt on. I narrowed my axles but full width would work and it's a lot easier. Dana 60 front most were 4:10 geared from gm and a 14 bolt matching rear would be easy also. Or you could go dodge truck with matching 60's and get better rear ground clearance. I've done several sbc bbc swaps and this was by far easier and nobody but nobody else is going to say they have the same thing. Well almost

Hm, 440 eh?? Maybe a 6-pac, beefed up a little since you say you wish you had a bit more power. My dad said guys back then were putting 426 Hemi heads on 440's...looking at them at car shows I don't know they would match up. I may have some research if I go that route...but I'm an electrical/electronics engineer, so I like the idea of computer controlled motors, plus they would do a bit better as they can make up for sand clogged air filters or moisture getting sucked in from a mud hole.

I think the new hemi with fuel injection would be the way to go, easier to tune for your needs. I love the old mopars but its hard to beat this new stuff.

426 heads will fit a 440 for about 4000.00 for the conversion kit !!!! Still a440 with a 440 source 543 kit , a few oiling mods aftermarket efi 750-850 hp on pump gas. The 727 can be built to handle anything you can throw at it. Even the smog 400 short deck can be a big hp 512 CID pump gas monster and they are around. as for the 440 any 30 year old camper will do for an engine Transmission donor. They are all over michigan for cheap money.

Good ideas...thanks, I'll consider it, but still leaning towards the new Hemi's. But if a 440 seems to lack a bit of power for the purpose I'm sure the 5.7 Hemi will too, so I may have to look into a 6.4 Crate Hemi...I dunno, too many options LOL

Yeah my wife says my imagination is deep and endless ......like the new York city sewer system.

I will bet the new Hemi is a whole lot lighter then the cast iron 440 witch will play into it also. Just something else to think about :D

Boy I dunno, my truck is almost 7000 lbs and it's only a half ton, Hemi's hystorically are quite heavy. My Chevy friends with trucks about the same as mine (half ton quad cab 4x4, bigger motor) are barely over 5000 lbs. So the extra weight has to be somewhere. They said on My Classic Car a long time back a 426 Head weighs very close to the same as a Ford 390 block. Granted the new ones will be lighter than an old Hemi, but I dunno about a 440. I don't know any of this for sure, but just piecing together bits of info and have doubt that they are significantly lighter.

Well here is a CJ7 we came across out 4Wheeling, it is running 1ton axels and 42" tires and had a nasty sounding v8 enjoy

485-620 for the new hemi 670 for the 440 full dress iron intake iron exhaust .
But if electronics is what you want the new will definitely fit the bill.

Who ever owns that rig sure decked it out, :notworthy: nice all the way around
